Gary Shteyngart Wins Wodehouse Prize

Posted by on Wed, May 25, 2011 at 4:19 PM

The Wodehouse Prize, which goes to humorous books of literary fiction, has been awarded to Gary Shteyngart for his novel Super Sad True Love Story. He is the first American ever to win the prize. U!S!A! U!S!A!

Shteyngart, of course, was the headliner for Verse Chapter Verse , The Stranger's books-and-music series, last year. Is his winning the Wodehouse Prize after taking part in Verse Chapter Verse merely a coincidence? Doubtful! This Saturday, China Miéville will be reading at Chop Suey as part of Verse Chapter Verse. The only question remaining is, which award will he win?

Shteyngart gave the funniest author reading ever at the Lake Forest Third Place back when Absurdistan was just out in hardcover. I've never seen a book reading crowd laugh like that before -- there were only about a dozen of them and they filled the store with sound.

He totally deserves this prize.

The only American ever to win a prize... established in 2000.

Try not to just blindly regurgitate the press release, Paul.
