Newt Gingrich Brutalized in Glitter Attack

Posted by on Tue, May 17, 2011 at 8:54 PM

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich and his wife Callista were hit with glittery confetti by a protester Tuesday during the couple's appearance at a book-signing.

The man approached the Gingriches during the signing at a downtown Minneapolis hotel, dumped a cracker box full of colorful confetti on the pair and said, "Feel the rainbow, Newt! Stop the hate! Stop anti-gay politics!"

Okay, I've gotta say this: I think this is a dumb way to protest anti-gay politicians. It's certainly not a tactic that's going to win over any conservative hearts and minds. It'll get you a go-round in the press, but those column inches aren't going to advance the cause.

That said, "Feel the rainbow, Newt!" is a fucking hilarious sentence, and that Gingrich supporter at the end of the video is so terrifying and creepy that he feels made up. And it's yet another addition to the car-wreckish glory that is Newt Blingrich's Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Week. So maybe this counts as a win, after all?

Are you kidding that's a terrible way to protest? Glitter takes forever to go away completely. Too bad he didn't get a more direct hit to Newt's hair. Getting glittered sucks.

I'm still finding large glitter confetti in my apartment from a Head Like a Kite show I attended last year.

Yeah, that guys voice made me think that he is really a Reptilian in disguise. But I already thought that of most Republicans, so whatever.

Provocations like this are an opportunity for these guys to capitalize well on playing the victim, or to show their true, chilling, saurian colors. The lizard in them will out.

I think protests like this - that make the anti-gay position ridiculous - are, if not perfect, far from bad. Conservatives aren't going to change their minds, so keeping the debate framed so that their opinion is considered stupid bigotry is the best option in dealing with them. (We can't expect Fred Phelps and his clan to keep doing all t he work for us.)

It would have been nice if the kid thought to point out that Mr. Security is actively trying to "disrupt" the lives of gay people through promoting second-class citizenship. Forget about disrupting a damn autograph op.

I feel like any way to get someone more politically involved, as long as it makes them feel good and doesn't harm anyone (except for fascists), is totally alright and should be encouraged.

That guy claiming that right-wing activists never disrupt left-wing politicians' neighborhood events? Jared Loughner must have missed that guy's memo.

This is the kind of stunt that hurts the cause of marriage equity. It lets the "Family Council" types claim that they are the victims, and it trivializes those working toward equity.

The equity side is winning. Act like it.

If he wanted to watch Newt squirm, the protester could have asked him a pointed question about his alternative lifestyle.

@13: You’ll have to think of another example Venomlash, Loughner went after Gifforrds motivated by personal rages, not politics. Nobody’s punditry can truely fit a very mentally ill person to fit their agenda.

In related news, Rip Taylor is suing.

Can you imagine a president named newton? LMAO! This guy's considered a policy wonk-- a conservative intellectual...the self described creator of supply side economics. And mr. kitty is a spaceship captain.

Sure, Loughner was just another isolated instance -- keep pushing that line.

The violent eliminationist hate speech spewed by the Right 24/7 for decades on end has nothing to do with pushing the buttons of the nutjobs who blow up government buildings, shoot abortion doctors and a Democratic congresswoman.

Even though urologists don't get asassinated on a regular basis, the threat level on a black, Democratic President has gone through the roof compared to previous Presidents, and it wasn't a Republican politician shot in the head, but one who -- coincidentally -- hhad a target painted on her by Sarah Palin.

Pure coincidence.

I think this is a dumb way to protest anti-gay politicians.

I agree. Obviously, the easiest way to protest anti-gay politicians is to not vote for them. Unless the anti-gay politician is Obama. Then, it seems, the best thing to do is to uncritically support anti-gay politicians.

Yeah, because ACT-UP and other in-your-face protest groups were such failures.

Oh wait.

@15 and those who agree:
Those poor poor victims, how will they ever get that glitter off? The Pain! The Pain!
The pointed question angle has been tried and tried, for over two decades, from the right even.
Newt has no shame and no logic. Glitter is the last, best resort.
RESISTANCE IS USELESS, YOU WILL FEEL PRETTY!

@23, don't you realize that equity is winning?

How has progress happened over the last 20 years, if not from changing minds of those who used to oppose equity? I'm guessing that none of the people who changed their minds in the past 20 years did so because of stunts like this.

Yes, there will be holdouts, especially among those who profit from their opposition to equity. You and I can agree that there's no use trying to change their minds, but there are still people who can be persuaded. Tactics like this won't move any of them to our side.

The Max 25
I think that every time a bigot gets pied, re-named, or glittered it decreases the aggregate legitimacy of the hate cause. It's a much kinder relation of the burning cross. They spew their hate, they run the risk of getting glittered, pied or re-named, eventually it starts to sink in. Their voices get softer, their hate gets toned down, and eventually it will wither away. And pieing, glittering, and renaming will have done their bit.

All this did was add another 15 second clip to their "teh gays are bad because" propaganda against us. This is not the way to protest.

@31 This was probably the kind of "irritation" that Matthew Shepard was killed for.

Gays protest bigotry with glitter.
Bigots protest gay existence with murder.

Pretty hard to see the difference for some, I'm sure.

@31:

In that case, we need to counter with a montage of 30 second clips of how the homo-haters are *beating us to death*.

Glitter? I *wish* that was the worst thing that could happen to a gay man in this country.

Yeah.

A homosexual in America has a one in 5.2 million chance of being beaten to death by a bigot.
That's revolting...

He also has a one in 5 chance of being infected with HIV by another homosexual.
But thats OK.....
