Regarding the Next Season at On the Boards

Posted by on Thu, May 12, 2011 at 4:02 PM

They've announced it. There's some good-looking stuff: tEEth, Erin Jorgesen with Steve Fisk, Trimpin, SuttonBeresCuller, zoe | juniper [Zoe Scofiled and Juniper Shuey], the freaking Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and more.

And here's an email exchange I had with Jessica Massart of On the Boards about one of their artists for next season.

Jessica:

Angélica Liddell is a Spanish artist who can only do 3 shows because of the amount of booze she consumes onstage and the time it takes to heal from the cutting.

Me:

what does liddell do besides drink a lot and cut herself? (and what does she drink? and what does she cut herself with?)

Jessica:

Jessica: Angélica… she cuts herself with razor blades and at one point uses safety pins (I think) to pierce a piece of fabric to her chest. She’s drinking beer nonstop throughout the show. In addition to that she’s delivering text, shooting at targets with paintball guns, wielding a blowtorch, and playing the cello.

She writes all of her own stuff, but this is the first time her stuff will be translated into English so I don’t have any excerpts or scripts to send. You can get a sense of her voice in this lone translated interview (“what I do is some kind of pornography, the pornography of the soul”).

Sounds like a hell of a show. She's coming this October.

On the Boards has, hands down, the most interesting live performances in Seattle. It's the only theater in town I consider subscribing to. I am deeply looking forward to next season.

wait wait wait...there's money to be made in manic alcoholism and self-mutilation? I did college ALL wrong.

And now, with some suggestions for the weekend, it's our City Correspondent, Stefon! How are you Stefon?

The same.

Where should we go out this weekend?

New York's hottest club is Angelica. It's got a jacked midget who cuts herself with razor blades, a liposuction artiste who safety pins a piece of fabric to her chest, 25 mandrills dressed in zoot suits drinking beer, nonstop fundraising appeals from a world class city, a dead baby elephant delivering text and shooting at targets with paintball guns, Jean Godden wielding a blowtorch, and Sir Mix-A-Lot playing the cello.

OtB is also really excited to be working alongside Seattle Theatre Group, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Spectrum Dance Theater, Seattle Art Museum and Cornish to bring the Merce Cunningham Dance Company to the Paramount this fall. More details on that soon.
