A federal appeals court is scheduled to rule next week whether to extend a stay of a lower court order that briefly ended the NFL lockout, and if the decision goes against NFL owners, the Seahawks could take advantage of the opportunity to close a deal to secure their new franchise quarterback: Philadelphia Eagles' backup Kevin Kolb.
A Kolb to Seattle deal isn't a new rumor, but it's been making the rounds again back in Philadelphia, where the talk is that the Eagles have already been offered a 2012 first round draft pick in exchange for Kolb. The Seahawks are reportedly unwilling to meet the asking price to re-sign a 35-year-old Matt Hasselbeck, and following a draft in which they failed to pick up a quarterback, General Manager John Schneider told reporters "We had a plan going in, and we still have our plan. We just can’t execute that plan right now." That sure does sound like the Seahawks are ready to make a deal.
And Kolb would be a good fit. Slated to be the Eagle's quarterback of the future before Michael Vick's stunning reemergence, Kolb could step right into the Seahawks' huddle, having been developed in a very similar offensive system. In fact, the only thing that might get in the way of a Kolb deal are the Arizona Cardinals, who are also desperate for a quarterback, and who some football insiders think have the inside track. It's a competition that could be more exciting than the season itself. Assuming there is one.
