Life Is Cruel

Posted by on Fri, Apr 29, 2011 at 5:04 PM

For those in the comment threads upset at Kelly for posting a video of a real live goose doing its best rendition of a classic Looney Tunes gag, let me just point out that this particular bird at least lived and died with more dignity than your average chicken dinner. So lighten up... and bon appetit!

I'm not sure it was so much being upset at the fact of a bird dying or of existence being cruel, more that one fun person would want to rub other fun peoples' noses in it. Which several of you do, and that's fine. You've made sure we heard Hutch defame Dennis and Judy Shepard's son Matthew, shown us a goose in its flight from danger into death, instructed us sternly about the fate of chickens.

Yet I can't help but reflect on the immortal words of the YouTube goose-vid commenter venomlash spotted, BlazingChao: "I find this difficult to masturbate to".

At least in a local, sustainable chicken farm there is some semblance of a dignified life and a dignified death. But there is a price for that dignity.

There is no dignity here. Most people just want the cheapest possible chicken in their Albertsons/Walmart/Safeway aisle, and don't care about the details.

You should see the whole film. This clip is very good, the whole film is very telling.

Chickens don't have dignity because they have no appreciation of the formality or gravity of an occasion or situation. Dignity is an artificial construct we project on to animals.

That's right, banna. Chickens don't wear expensive ties and attend fancy parties with pretty people and their petty secrets. Therefore, not only don't they deserve "dignity," it doesn't exist...is that for them? Is that like pink elephants "exist" for some but not others? But we're animals, too...so is dignity an "artificial" concept we project on each other (like...bullets)? Oh no, it's not artificial but real for us and not for chickens because we can use salad forks and read glossy magazines! If intelligence were the trait prized in making ethical evaluations and determining the treatment of organisms by other organisms, what argument have you against eating le...ah...huzzah! I bid thee good night, chicken strip.

Fuck you. Animals are not people. They're food.

Some animals! I can't stress that enough. @7 here's what I'm thinking. If you can't pass a certain test, you're food. If you can...well, you're not food, but you could have been had you failed.

I'm gonna eat those chicken and poop them, so there's your dignity. I'm a lot more worried about the workers.

"There is no dignity here."

Can chickens spell 'dignity'?

"Chickens don't wear expensive ties and attend fancy parties with pretty people and their petty secrets"

Actually they can, as an appetizer.

"here's hoping your kids get a nasty case of salmonella"

Spoken like a true human-hating animal rights loon. BTW, handle and cook any bird right and there's virtually zero chance of getting sick. More chance your kids will get run over by the tofu truck.

"Actually they can, as an appetizer."

So they are entitled to dignity? Another issue wrapped up by the masters at slog: all animals except humans deserve dignity and "special treatment" (i.e., avoiding needless suffering and torture). I wonder, though, whether that holds true in certain cases of desperate need...and we know it doesn't. Once again, pass the test, and you're not food.

@11 hahaha, I hope that was ironic, because it was fucking hilarious. You do realise wishing someone's children catch a horrible disease is far worse then being ok with eating animals? And if you eat animals you have to be ok with how it gets to your plate. I do believe that you are the prick in this situation.

For me it was more of a warning would have been appreciated. SLOG always posts NSFW if there is nudity but to me unexpected death of an animal is way worse! So yeah. It sucked.

@11 Of course, because I feed raw chicken to my kids everyday.... FACEPALM.JPG

Who gives a fuck if chickens live brief undignified lives? chickens are undignified to begin with.

And delicious.

Which is, evolutionarily, their DOOM.

@17. No, salvation! The wild ancestor of the chicken is a rare bird in some forest in India. Domestic chickens probably number in the bazillion. Chicken genes want their instances to taste as delish to us as possible to us

yes, this is the point. there should have been a warning. to defend the lack of warning is to be a childish prick.

there was also ample warning the other day when someone posted the video of that trans woman getting the shit kicked out of her.

and by the way? most of the time i eat chicken i buy at a local farmers market and it is pasture-raised. you cannot accuse me of hypocrisy here, or whatever childish finger pointing you are engaging in.

so again, fuck you goldy/kelly fucking oh.
