Morning News: Atheists, Transsexuals, Mormons, and Money Grubbers

Posted by on Wed, Apr 27, 2011 at 7:45 AM

Jesus Christ: President Obama released his birth certificate this morning.

Cop Talk: A new report shows that in the first two months of 2011, 25 civilian allegations of Seattle police officer misconduct were ruled to be unfounded by the department's Office of Professional Accountability. 32 percent of cases ended with supervisory intervention (counseling or education for the officer), and only one civilian complaint resulted in discipline.

Bad Apple: Company denies that your iPhone is tracking your location, Gary.

Atheist Chaplain: Atheists push to get religious representation, secular rock concerts, included in the military.

Black Depression: African Americans struggle to find work in cities where their unemployment rate—up to 15.5 percent—is double that of white Americans. This has created "a veritable epidemic of joblessness that has undone decades of economic progress for millions of African Americans," reports the Huffington Post.

Gender Win: Transsexuals get their own gender category in Pakistan.

Money Grubbers: Termites eat through 10 million rupees ($225,000) stored in an Indian bank.

New UW President: Is Mormon, rides Harleys, concludes the Seattle Times in new exhaustive profile.

First-Degree Computer Trespassing: Two little girls from Issaquah stand accused of posting sexually explicit photographs to other little girl's Facebook page, messaging "random individuals" to arrange fake sex hookups.

Blah blah blah Seahawks?

Blind Eyes: Study finds that Guantanamo Bay doctors concealed evidence of intentional harm and inmate torture—including stories of rape and documented bone fractures, contusions and lacerations.

I don't know about Dan, but I fully support marriage rights for polyurethane. I'll even go so far as to include polypropylene.

I'm glad that the President caved to the GOP by releasing his "long form" birth certificate.

But then the political discussion in this country has been controlled by the right wing for at least a generation.

@3,4 Exactly!

How long is Dan going to stay in the closet?

All of Slog wants to know-

Does Danny,
America's most articulate
(and well dressed)
advocate for marriage rights and equality,
support full human and civil rights for polygamists?

You go too far, sir.

Now please explain why Obama uses a Connecticut Social Security number that never appeared on any official document until it appeared on his Selective Service document in 1980.

@1 I don't know if Dan does but I do. Adults should be free to make whatever arrangement they please.
And I love that atheists are finally standing up for their rights!

@2: No, nothing on the Mariners and a "Blah blah blah Seahawks." Yet we get breathless updates about the NHL, which has such a rabid following around here.

Polypropylene and polyethylene are self-lubricating, and so may interdigitate freely. Polyurethane, not so much, and therefore may not meld with itself, with another, or with some class of a beast.

::facepalm:: when Pakistan is more progressive than the US. Not in a lot of ways, but this one is a danged good start.

Yay for them, boo for us.

@9, @15 I was born in 1963 and didn't get a social security number until 1979. You weren't required to have them for children back then. You had to get one before you got your first job.

Pakistan has an alternate gender and we can't even get ENDA passed.

RE: Real gender equity/freedom, America is now LESS progressive than Pakistan.

The catastrophe for African-Americans is very worrying. All of the new energy that's changing our cities and our economies is coming from Asians and Latinos, making America a much more interesting and multicultural place -- but black people are being left behind. Again. And too many cities are becoming like concentration camps for poor blacks -- Detroit, New Orleans, Baltimore -- as whites and other groups move out and take all the jobs with them. On the West Coast, cities with formerly vibrant black populations are seeing them disappear -- Los Angeles, San Francisco, even Seattle, as white as it is, is becoming less black.

@11, the thing is, the people who write the blog don't care about the Mariners or Seahawks, and do care about the NHL. It's their blog, not yours. More sports coverage might be nice, or not, depending on your point of view, but the point of view that matters is theirs.

You are welcome to submit your resume to The Stranger and see if they'll hire you as Slog Sports Desk, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

I really feel like that blowjob piece from the Seattle Times about the new UW pres really deserves its own thread. The Times has really given up all pretense of being a newspaper and is just reveling in its real role as a conservative opinion rag.

According to the article in order to become an atheist chaplain you'd still need a graduate degree in theology!? That's just fucking cruel.
