Worn Out: Video From the Stranger Fashion Show Finale

Posted by on Sat, Apr 9, 2011 at 5:05 PM

Video from the Worn Out finale, featuring designer Mark Mitchell, with hats by Stella Rose Saint Clair... and the final walk by all of the designers featured in the show...

I think Iggy Pop's "Lust For Life" was a perfect choice. Punk's not dead. Well, not quite yet.

Video filmed by "Fashion Expert Nathaniel Luke"

And I wasn't on the guest list.

Times have certainly changed since I ruled - RULED, I tell you - the weekly luncheon fashion shows at the F&N Tea Room. This town didn't dare change a hemline without a nod from me.

And look at me now. Stuck in a basement on Beacon Hill. My, how the mighty do fall.

Ms Vel-DuRay, if you had spent half the time cultivating friendships as you did working on your bust line you'd be living on the ground floor of the Beacon hill flop house now. And bravo to Mr Mitchell.

Sheer beauty. Mark Mitchell is a fucking genius and an amazing talent. His designs, from the wearable to couture, are gorgeous, and his craftsmanship is impeccable. A true Seattle treasure.

A regret having to miss this last night. Thanks for the video, Kelly O.

I LOVE the clothes worn by the two women at the 3:30 mark. Who is the designer?

"Iggy Pop's "Lust For Life""

i think you meant, "was worn out and over-used at least a decade ago". they may as well have played "blue monday" or "how soon is now".

@7 - think whatever you want. When I hear Iggy, he is, in my mind, this man: http://youtu.be/IbLRf0j80wU

and not you, or anyone else can take that away from me

Sarghorn darling, It's MRS. Vel-DuRay, especially to you. That's what you get for calling Chez Vel-DuRay a "flophouse". Technically, it's a dump.

And yes, dear Mark, oodles of congratulations - and to the other designers as well.

Oh, Catalina, one of my treasured possessions is a childhood photo of me dolled up before hitting the runway at the F&N children's fashion show. It was just the once, but that's all it took to learn the heartbreak of not being allowed to take the clothes home afterward...I don't envy these models that...o, little blue blazer...o, saffron turtleneck...o, velvet bell bottoms in multicolored vertical stripes....

Missus Vel-DuRay, I'll bet it's the most decorated and gorgeous basement in all of Beacon Hill.

Sorry to digress, but you guys are in the NYTimes today (I just noticed...)!

Dominic even gets a shout-out:
"This part of the fight was inevitable,” said Dominic Holden, the news editor for The Stranger, a weekly newspaper that has been critical of the tunnel.

(Obviously, this just goes to show Mr. Constant that the residents of Canada are ahead of the curve, when it comes to caring about tunnels in medium-sized cities not their own...)

Canuck, see, you're ahead of them bitches in Manhattan as usual...

And I do think "a weekly newspaper that has been critical of the tunnel" is about as understated a way to put it as one can imagine. Yardley's done a good job covering Pac NW stuff.

gus, I was surprised they didn't say, "Seattle's only newspaper"....that's gotta sting. And woot!, suck it schmancy New Yawkuhs, the rednecks can still bring it.

And I am visualizing your undoubtedly fabulous childhood outfit, and its all too brief tenure. I, too, had some wide-wale purple corduroy bell-bottoms, that, as I recall, caused a hissy fit of global proportions when I discovered my mother had sent them to the Sally Ann.

@3 mrs vel - duray
*sigh* the children don't do guest lists like they used to. i made the list but couldn't bring my husband and he'll be pouting about it for the next week.
however this is the first fashion show i've been to in quite some time that wadn't held in a church basement and it was something to behold. they didn't serve any frappe. and some of the clothes looked like they could use a good pressing ( my mother, on her first visit to seattle, complained ' does ANYbody in seattle own an iron ?' ). but there was booze .lots of booze. there was also lots of tiny bags of free chips. the not baked, not fried but 'pop' kind. no dips or paper napkins.just tiny bags of chips. the children don't know from crudites, hors d'oeuvres, or tea sammiches. there was one sullen young this thing that looked like she could've used a few bags of chips and some sensible shoes.- where did all those fabulous shoes come from? . and there was loads of free sugar water.and the bathroom was kinda far away.
but the fashion ? some of the fellas should lose the boxers. they bunch up in all the wrong places and make everything look uncomfortable. i do wished you could've seen it for yourself.there was some inspired designing going on. the naked women rainsuits made me envious. the video doesn't capture the audacious entrances of those last three outfits. i was hoping for couture and there were solid stretches of that. and there were even a couple pieces that an old big boneded person such as myself. would squeeze into. i left feeling proud and saucy.. especially saucy. thank all of y'all for that.
thanks..

So Riz dear, it sounds as if I had shown up in my best Chanel knock-off (RIP, Orbachs. Besides, real Chanel in Seattle is just pretentious) and my add-a-bead necklace, hoping for sherry and tea sandwiches served on Wedgewood, I would have been disappointed?

And your mother is a wise woman: it wouldn't kill anyone in this town if they learned to use an iron.

Not only do the clothes look amazing in this video, but the audience as well. A handful of boring, polite "clap-clap-clap" fashion shows I went to in Lausanne in '94 kinda turned me off the whole idea.

Irons are the first step on the path toward fascism, ladies. Do your part for democracy: use the dryer with a damp washcloth for ten minutes.

Um, TVDinner, you just saved my wrinkly ass with that. I hate to iron, for once I start I'm very much a perfectionist and it takes all fucking day. When I read that the late Brooke Astor's butler would offer classes on ironing I thought about it, I did:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/29/nyregi…

But I usually don't bother, and unless I send everything out, it shows. So thanks for the ameliorating trick.

Pretty magical night all around. I'm really happy that The Stranger went the community fashion direction, and chose to highlight local designers, not use agency models, and then go all out with the production values.

Also would like say that this show was immaculate. There were so many ways The Stranger could have done this wrong, but everything about this show was note-perfect. It was pretty inspiring for a lot of my designer friends who make clothes as a hobby, and think about taking it further. I sincerely hope The Stranger throws more fashion shows. There is just so much innovative talent around here, and I think our region deserves a chance to shirk off our image as grunge/Eddie Bauer people.

The show was amazing I had a blast and so did a lot of people I spoke with afterwards. I just wanted more. Some of the clothes were very fashion forward and some not so much... In my own personal opinion... I think Alex was best in show. Dont kill me!! ;)
