Big Day Today in Wisconsin

Posted by on Tue, Apr 5, 2011 at 12:54 PM

Today is election day in Wisconsin, the first one since Tea Party Gov. Scott Walker set out on his anti-worker/anti-union crusade. And the outcome couldn't be more critical.

Under normal circumstances the only challenger with the strength to take out an incumbent state supreme court justice is the Angel of Death, but conservative Justice David Prosser could well become the first electoral victim of the anti-Walker backlash that's been sweeping through Wisconsin. And while there's been little polling on which to base predictions, anecdotal reports suggest that turnout is unusually strong, particularly in Democratic precincts... and that's gotta bode well for challenger JoAnne Kloppenburg.

At stake is more than just bragging rights. Conservatives currently hold a 4-3 majority on the state's highest court, which a Kloppenburg victory would presumably flip. And that could control how the court rules when Walker's arguably unconstitutional legislation finally comes before it.

Either way, there's a movement afoot in Wisconsin that could end up revitalizing the progressive base and redefining the terms of the 2012 election. Enough signatures have already been gathered to hold recall votes on two Republican state senators, and they're only halfway toward the 60-day deadline. Within a few months, Wisconsin Democrats could potentially flip control of both the senate and the supreme court. And then Walker himself is eligible for recall come January.

Interesting times.

Initially, things look very good. Off-year elections like this usually have a turnout around 10%. The Madison City Clerk's office is projecting turnout today around 60%. My little neighborhood precinct on the near-west side certainly supported that assumption this morning.

Statewide turnout is currently projected to be around 20%. High turnout statewide is bad for conservatives in any case but the numbers suggest Madison's influence is tripled.

And then people will forget and get lazy and republicans will be elected again later. Then the republicans will destroy everything the dems have accomplished and the people will get reactively angry at their own laziness and the dems will be voted back in.

@3, We could only be so lucky for that to repeat until the sun explodes. It's more likely that the Repubs will either start a nuclear war or piss off enough of the rest of the world that they'll team up against us. Or, more likely than either of those they'll just fuck the country up enough that the 90% will rise up against the 10% and overthrow them. Then, after a period of anarchy the same fuckers (or people identical to them) will come to power and rename the parties (Blackwater/XE style) so at least the names will be different.

the bit about the angel of death being the only one with enough power to remove an incumbent justice made me think immediately of a be-cloaked and scythe-holding Death (voiced by norm macdonald), making a lame joke as he takes a seat on the bench. then i realized you were talking about actual death... and i realized i've watched too much family guy.

What I don't get is that if they passed the union busting bill by saying it wasn't a budgetary matter so they didn't need a quorum, then even IF the Supreme Court rules against them, they can just pass the bill again, this time w/o breaking their Open Meetings law.. which is I'm sure exactly what they'll do if they lose.

I know it's fun to shmooze, but the E and the K should not be standing next to each other. "VOTEK LOPPENBURG" just doesn't cut it.
