Excellent! Someone Buy That Man a Drink!

Posted by on Wed, Mar 23, 2011 at 8:52 AM

Or, uh, some other idiom to express my enthusiasm for this story.

A 49-year-old man is in Sullivan County Jail without bail after authorities say he showed up for a court hearing on a felony DWI charge drunk and carrying an open can of Busch beer, plus four more cans in a bag.

Also, I'd like it noted in the record that he's in jail without bail because he showed up drunk for his hearing, not because authorities said he did so. Come on, NBC New York. Standards! And Busch? Come on, drunk guy! Standards!

Well, at least the local paper got the phrasing right:

"He also was carrying an open can of Busch beer and was drunk, authorities say"

Oh, but isn't Busch kind of perfect for a downstate townie alky from the hamlet of Swan Lake, in a county full of decaying Borscht Belt resort hotels? I mean, Natty Ice would have made him look like some kind of striver.

When you're already drunk, then Busch beer is fine.

Actually, it's not at all uncommon for folks to show up drunk for these hearings. Bringing the booze along, though - well, that's pretty original.

To take a line from a Red Dwarf paperback book where Lister meets Peterson on a shuttle back to the ship, "Id offer you one, but ive only got 10 left".

What @1 said.

And here is a incomplete list of beers that Busch is better than:
Bud
Pabst
Golden Anniversary
Stella (yes, hipsters, Busch is better than "the Budweiser of Europe")
Schlitz
MGD and MHL
others...

@12,

The article doesn't say, but it seems likely that he was held in contempt of court and hasn't technically broken any laws.

Often it's a condition of release that the defendant abstain from alcohol...so by showing up drunk he violated it. Also courts will often use portable breath testers if they think someone is intoxicated...I saw someone blow a .269 the other day. And he was upright.

@12, @13 - He was out on bail for the DWI case. Based on his prior DWI convictions, I'd say that either he was violating conditions of his release, or that the judge revoked his right to bail based on public safety concerns.
