Surfs up... 4.5 inches.
  • Surfs up... 4.5 inches.

From the No News Is Good News Department, the King County Office of Emergency Management wants you to know that they are totally on top of the Japanese quake tsunami situation:

Around 8:45 a.m. Pacific Time, a small wave of about 4.5 inches was recorded on the Seattle waterfront. The tsunami was smaller than a high tide, and no damage has been reported. ... A tsunami advisory has been issued for the Washington coast, which means that widespread inundation and flooding is NOT expected.

Whew! What a relief. Though it's kinda amazing that an earthquake off Japan could create even a lilliputian tsunami in Elliot Bay.

That said, as the press release points out, "King County escaped harm this time." It's only a matter of time, so be prepared!

8 feet 1 inch off of Culver City, excellent surfing.

Personally, I wouldn't worry, there's a giant island in the way up in BC and it has to be at a very restricted angle.

Now earthquakes and the followup volcanic action ... that's something else.
