A Class That Teaches Old Teabaggers How to Troll Amazon

Posted by on Thu, Mar 10, 2011 at 2:38 PM

Wow. Did this clip from the documentary (Astro)Turf Wars make the rounds already back in October? If so, please forgive my reposting, but The Awl just brought this video to my attention for the first time, and I wanted to make sure that Slog saw it. This is an astroturf class for Teabaggers. It's about how to troll the internet (Amazon, Rotten Tomatoes, Flixster) to "control the online dialogue."

The teacher admits to doing this for 30 minutes a day. "Literally 80% of the books I put a star on, I don't read, so that's how it works, okay?"

"give our ideas a fighting chance."

yes, because your ideas on their own have no chance, unless you cheat...

Is it just me, or does he have almost the same voice as Aziz Ansari?

The last desperate gasp of al-Qaeda.

That's what they are.

Too bad for them that the Internet made everyone realize Freedom is way more fun than their insane right-wing fantasies.

So that's where the older brother from The Wonder Years ended up. Huh.

That's why most of these sites have "Helpful/Not Helpful" buttons now. And those political reviews always overwhelmingly are "Not Helpful". Regarding Amazon all the "liberal/commie" books have political 1star reviews, yet nobody can be really bothered to write political 1star reviews of conservative books. Us commies are too busy on the Slog and Kos.

The ones that crack me up are 1star reviews for profanity and sex, almost every novel has one. Realistic novel about Vietnam(Matterhorn) "why do those soldiers have curse all the time". Non-bowdlerized translations of foreign classics: "Why can't they leave the dirty parts out of Madame Bovary, I wouldn't know the difference".

So guerrilla tactics consist of behaving like a bunch of 8th graders?

Oh and I am so finding everything written by a right winger and giving it one star and mention in the comments how the author is a child rapist.

Sounds like the Koch bros aren't very smart with using their bucks to shape the dialogue. Just cause they have a lot of them, sure, they'll make a dent somewhere. but as effective political organizing this is really stupid.

The Tea Party movement isn't about tricking people or misleading public opinion. The movement is about reducing the size of an overreaching and burdensome government. This man is an extremist. Such people exist in every political group. Focus on issues. Creating stereotypes with which to judge the entirety of such a broad group of people, based on such specific examples of stupidity, exhibited by only a small portion of the larger group, isn't intellectually honest.

The Tea Party movement is all about tricking people and misleading public opinion, first and foremost the Tea Baggers themselves.

The Koch Brother's funded this "movement," gave you your lines to say, and have hoodwinked you but good, honey.

Tea Party politics always devolve to this: somehow government is only "unwieldy or burdensome" if it serves millions of American citizens, not so, if it services the 400 millionaires and billionaires who have greedily scoffed up over half the money in this country.

But they allow you to cling to your racism, misogyny, and homophobia, so you're happy to help them destroy what's left of the middle class in this country.

These people are only as mature as the slobbering masses of 4chan. They're using exactly the same tactics.

Reason #178,000 why it's useless to confront trolls.
