1. The big popular-fiction event tonight is the Deborah Harkness reading at Elliott Bay Book Company. A Discovery of Witches is a much-buzzed about debut novel about witchcraft and adventure. It is supposed to be like the Twilight series, but for adults, and good.

2. University Book StoreTown Hall hosts Susan Jacoby tonight. Jacoby's book Never Say Die: The Myth and Marketing of the New Old Age is about how all this youth marketing to old people is denying the fact that everyone gets old and dies, and there is nothing we can do about it. Jacoby contends that older people should be aware of what's really going to happen to them so that they can make smart choices.

3. If you're looking for something a little more current-eventsy, Town Hall hosts Michael Scheuer tonight. The "former Chief of the CIA's Osama bin Laden Unit" reads from his new book, Osama bin Laden.

4. If you write, you should know about Hugo House's newest monthly happy hour. Write Out is kind of the producer equivalent of Christopher Frizzelle's Silent Reading Parties at the Sorrento: One celebrity guest offers a writing prompt, and then the rest of the happy hour is spent with everyone drinking booze and quietly writing. Sounds like fun to me, and as a bonus, tonight's guest is Stacey Levine.

5. Visit the reading calendar for more information about all tonight's events, and what's going on for the rest of the week.
