Bookseller Borders, which helped pioneer superstores that put countless mom-and-pop bookshops out of business, filed for bankruptcy protection Wednesday, sunk by crushing debt and sluggishness in adapting to a rapidly changing industry.

For those of you who ignored Paul's warnings, the company says it intends to honor all gift cards and loyalty programs during the reorganization, so you're safe... assuming you still live anywhere near a Borders after it closes about a third of its 642 stores over the next few weeks.
