A Christian Doing the Christian Thing

Posted by on Wed, Feb 16, 2011 at 1:34 PM

Slog tipper Brandon sent along this video of a Mormon woman speaking out for marriage equality. This is absolutely an example of a Christian acting on her beliefs, taking a stand, and doing the right thing. It was posted on Valentine's Day. She explains:

I put this video on MormonsforMarriage.com during the Prop 8 debate. At the time, speaking out via this video threatened my temple recommend and calling, and I chose to take it down to protect my standing in the church. I regret that decision and put it back up as a tribute to the legend of Valentine

You should watch it:

I like how she used Mormon fears of government persecution as a pivot. Nicely done!

She suggests the very thing that causes mankind such horror and misery as it's cure. But in a sweet voice. Sorry, none today, thanks.

Putting the video up when it's safe is not an act of a brave person. It's the act of the coward trying to appear brave.

@2 I know you don't want to hear this, but people are still going to have religious beliefs long after gay and lesbian equality is achieved in this country.

@3 True, but Paul's not accusing her of being brave.

You give her no credit at all? Wow, where is your understanding? It's a huge deal that she put it up again for everyone, everywhere to see. I'm sure she's going to feel it this Sunday at church.

I give her a lot of credit and her children have a good mother who looks beyond herself to the world at large. Encourage these efforts.

My stomach twists a little at all the Christian imagery, but I think that the way she expresses her faith is a shining example of what religion can be. Take notes, people.

@8 - she knows her audience. Agreed, by the way, and thanks for saying it.

Damn it. Why are Mormons always so hot? The fruits of some sort of polygamous eugenics project, I'd guess.

Nothing says don't discriminate like giving 10% of your earnings to a bunch of bigots. If I spoke out on you tube against lynchings but gave 10% of my earnings to the KKK would that be brave?
