Dear Prayer Warrior,

Put your prayer knee pads on. I think God is leading me to raise support to sue the state of Washington Board of Education for teaching a known lie, evolution. Let's see how we can win this battle and then take it to the federal level.

Pastor Hutch

God, I hate it when the Pastor asks me to put my knee pads on...

It is remarkable to me that anyone takes this guy seriously. A few years ago I felt pity for his congregation but now that we're behind him pulling stunts like this multiple times and them going nowhere, I'm lead to believe his church is just dumb. I mean, how many times does your pastor have to say he's hearing from God about something and then it go nowhere before you begin to think, "This guy is full of shit..."

That being said, I would LOVE to see him try and take this to court. The amount of lulz that would come out of this would be amazing.

I don't even know where to begin with this letter....maybe here: http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/…

While I believe some of these folks are willfully ignorant, it is time for us in the scientific community to really start standing up to them

Do it! I dare ya! I double-God dare ya! Seriously, it would be fun to see this guy get smacked by the court for filing a frivolous lawsuit. Might even face money sanctions under Rule 11. Your collection plate dollars at work!

Apparently people haven't been paying enough attention to Hutch lately and so he feels the need to get the spotlight back on him.

What a sad, small person he is.

I keep asking how exactly you teach creationism. After you say "god did it" whats in chapter 2?

And whats with this going for little stuff, if you have god behind you why not fight for the right to stone your wife, or hell take on the number zero, it being an unholy lie as well.

Looks like Hutch needs to read up on current events...

If intelligent design (creationism clothed in some scientific jargon) can't make it through the courts and be seen as a valid educational alternative to evolution, creationism certainly won't.

@5, unfortunately, I doubt that this would qualify for rule 11 sanctions. Although, considering that this has already been litigated extensively in other federal courts around the country, it should. Shame.

Psst, Hutch, God wants you to demonstrate the awesome power of faith by drinking a bottle of bleach. Go on, put your trust in the Lord. You know you want to.

Let's all pray for an "evolution" to stage IV.

@11:

In that case, hopefully the courts will let him keep appealing - and paying ginormous sums to any lawyer unscrupulous to want to represent an obviously losing case - for as long as it takes to bankrupt his shoddy little suburban tent-pole meeting.

Comte, appeals are actually surprisingly cheap compared to the primary case. Just briefing and (maybe) a short oral argument - there's not much to it. Where you really rack up the money is attorneys' fees, deposition expenses, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and all the other shit. I'd guess he's looking at a ballpark number of $80-$100,000 to take this as far as it will go. Don't know if that will bankrupt his church or not, but I'll bet it'll hurt.

It's a clever money raising scheme. Those bonehead religious types are ripe for the picking, even in a recession. They never admit they're wrong.

@8 chapters 2 through 1000 are filled with all the explaining away of the staggering amount of detail we know about how DNA works and how the "creator" keeps it from changing over time. You know, in spite of the way that we can watch it change in real time.

What he's trying to do is rev up his congregation. He doesn't really care what anyone else thinks. They pay his salary.

This would be funny as hell, except for the tax money the state will have to spend defending against his suite in court.

Perhaps he is displeased with the growing success of "The Clergy Letter Project"? Last I read The Clergy Letter Project had over 14,000 members, including the Southwestern Washington Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, who are endorsing evolution. To quote The Clergy Letter Project,

"We believe that the theory of evolution is a foundational scientific truth, one that has stood up to rigorous scrutiny and upon which much human knowledge and achievement rests. To reject this truth or to treat it as "one theory among others" is to deliberately embrace scientific ignorance and transmit such ignorance to our children. We believe that among God's good gifts are human minds capable of critical thought and the failure to fully employ this gift is a rejection of the will of our Creator."

The Clergy Letter Project advocates that school boards affirm evolution as a core component. They also advocate within congregation all over the US and some 14 other countries.

Telling people to think can be scary to some, and it is a way to make the "news" and drum up donations.

I think Hutch has listened to "Like a Virgin" one too many times.

@21 my condolences, but I'm sure you can do better :-)

Seriously, why don't you try to take on "evolution" in Washington, and we'll find a way to drain your morally corrupt organization of its funds in court.

@23, @29 I actually said that wrong. She broke up with me because I was too liberal and believed in evolution and global warming. She's a bio major too, and we're required to take classes on evolution. Go figure.
