"Portland Is Where Young People Go to Retire"

Posted by on Wed, Dec 29, 2010 at 1:40 PM

Maybe everyone in the history of the internet has already seen this, but if not, you should: A teaser clip for Portlandia, the IFC comedy series created by and starring SNL's Fred Armisen and Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein.

Is there anything Carrie Brownstein can't do? It's like, after conquering the world with Sleater-Kinney, Brownstein asked herself, "What's the last thing people would expect the guitarist of a feminist punk band to do?", rightly answered "Sketch comedy!", then set about making it happen. I love her.

It's a nice city in Summer and has crappy if not worse weather than Seattle in Winter. Portland is fine by me, even if it is full of retired young people.

Fuck I love Portland. I feel bad for other places in the country that don't have the same access to our area's two large, progressive (and... laid back, unpretentious, um, intentionally unfashionable) cities.

Amusing and true, but was wearing a biker jacket WITHOUT PANTS a thing in the '90s? I don't remember that.

IFC is where Independent Film goes to die. Sellouts.

What a great way to put it: 'Portland is where young people go to retire.' it's SO true. Too bad it's mostly because most of these, "young people" lack drive, ambition, assets, and gravitate to the reputation it has earned as, "POTland." don't get me wrong,overall It's a fun progressive little city but If I lived there, I'd get annoyed with paying through the nose for income and real estate tax - so this group of young, "retirees" can mooch from couch to couch -never paying sales tax - sitting back and get baked all day. Seattle is WAY better.

I love Portland, and this song sounds like a Logan Lynn track so bonus.

In my calendar, I have a list of people in other cities that keep asking me to visit and a tally of how many times they mention it so I know when to apologize or force myself to visit -- Portland has the most tallies by far.

It's kind of ironic because portland actually has a huge problem with homeless kids. I mean, they're not working, but I wouldn't call them retired either...

I love Carrie's Farrah Fawcett blowout hairdo in this. And the song is killing me with catchiness.

@19 Good call, good call.

@13: Word. That's what we count on him for.

@16: Portland is just 1960s San Francisco all over again, just as Seattle was for Generation X. A nice way of putting this might be Baby Boom : San Francisco :: Generation X : Seattle :: Millenials : Portland. History is repeating itself once more...

@12 isn't Seattle known for all of those too?
