Dear Anti-Gay Bigots

Posted by on Thu, Dec 16, 2010 at 11:20 AM

Let's make a deal: give us our full civil equality—repeal DOMA, let us marry legally in all fifty states, end DADT, pass ENDA, stop torturing gay kids to death—and we'll let you have your fucking rainbows back.

HEY, guess what? stop stealing from other religions and claiming them as "christian" and we'll give you the fucking rainbow back. how's that? no, don't like that? well, deal with the gays taking the rainbow because we come from all walks of life, including race and gender. we don't discriminate like you so-called god fearing people do.

Hey Dr. Morse,

You know what else is a great symbol of Christianity and Judaism? Tolerance. Loving your fellow man. Remember?

Love,

Yesterday I was in Montana and scanning the radio when I heard what sounded like NPR. I listened for a while to what turned out to be a church channel. The conversation was absolutely unreal, about how gays shouldn't be in the military because all of the aids would infect people when they get hurt on the battlefield. I was this close to breaking my rule about talking on a cellphone while driving close to 80 on a narrow road in subfreezing conditions and calling in.

I guess that's what I get for visiting Montana.

As far as I'm concerned the Rainbow belongs to Bradley Manning, Dan.

And here's why --

Because lesbian sex is OMGHAWT for the menfolk. As long as the lesbians aren't fugly and are willing to fuck a guy now and then.

I'm deeply hurt and offended that all the wingnuts seem to want to obsess and talk about are gay men and teh anal sex. A slow, lingering, soul-melting act of cunnilingus performed by a trained lesbian on a PTA mom is just as subversive! Why does no one fear the lesbians!?? We're scary, too!

The strange thing about this is that the rainbow is still in common use as a symbol of Christianity. Search for 'christian rainbow' on google images. It's also used by European cooperatives.

Okay, you can have the rainbow. I think gays should take the crucifix (seriously, look how ripped Jesus was!)--hell, let them have the whole fucking cross: Lorraine, Greek Orthodox, whatever. This way, everyone wearing a cross will be considered gay. And the more crosses you have, or the bigger the cross, the more super gay you are--okay?

From the article:

"Proposition 8 was passed by a great grassroots coalition that included people from all across the religious traditions"

Translation: We think we're doing a good job of unifying Christianity politically so that us [Mormons/Catholics/Baptists/7th Day Adventists] can take control and force all the other [Mormons/Catholics/Baptists/7th Day Adventists] to adopt our particular brand of Christianity when they least expect it, and rule them all with the iron fist of a theocracy.

Sometimes, I really wish them luck, just so I can watch the shock and horror on their faces when their particular brand of Christianity is *not* the one who stabs everyone else in the back first, and then they go and say something brain-damaged like "OMG! What have we done!?!" But I only say that because I don't live in the same country, and as such they won't be stomping their jack boots on *me*.

"If gender is really irrelevant, why do self-described "gays" insist on having a male sex partner? Why isn't a really masculine woman just as acceptable as a male sex partner?" Oh, christ... Gender is irrelevant to quality of parenting, not necessarily style of parenting, and certainly not fucking, you stupid twat. Gender is also not the sole determining factor in sexual attraction, so a 'masculine' 'male' and 'masculine' 'female' are not interchangeable. Let's ban single parenting if the M/F parent thing is so important: Your wife/husband died? So sorry, we have to take your kids now so they can grow up with a mother and father. Or you can re-marry within a month. Your choice.

I think a two-state solution may be the only answer, and not just for Israel/Palestine...

Yeah, you damned gays, you also stole the rainbow from the Rainbow Gathering. http://www.welcomehere.org/gathering_of_… which I understand is going to be in your neck of the woods this year.'

Ever since you gays have been using it they had to change their name and couldn't use the rainbow for anything. Even the sky hasn't been able to have a rainbow since the gays stole it. Give it back! How did you get the copyright on that anyway?

I just am continuously bemused that these supposedly Christian groups are putting so much effort into ensuring premarital sex.

Although this quote displays such an awesome confusion regarding the basics of parenting and/or sex, that it's magical in it's own right:
"Do you really believe that mothers and fathers are interchangeable and that gender is irrelevant to parenting? If gender is really irrelevant, why do self-described "gays" insist on having a male sex partner? Why isn't a really masculine woman just as acceptable as a male sex partner?"

can we talk about anal sex some more? can we? anal sex?

because i think these people are really about hating on anal sex. the girl on girl thing they dont mind. men holding hands represents anal sex to them. i fuck the crap out of my girlfriends ass but they cant tell when we hold hands.

i know i know being gay is about love and all that, but i dont really see that as the issue. it's about anal sex.

it's about time there was an Anal Sex Coalition. that is some serious shit. who's with me?

Christian-normative people often give me such a headache, with the assumption that a Christian world-view is the only one really out there. Christianity has always been skilled at "borrowing/absorbing" other cultures' traditions and overlaying them with Christian meaning and serving it up as evidence of "proof" of a common world-view.

Seeing, it is my understanding, that Flood stories were common in ancient Near East cultures, Epic of Gilgamesh, etc., and that rainbows are found in Greek, Chinese, Hindu, Norse, Australian Aboriginal, Amazonian, etc., mythologies. It isn't too far reaching to think that as long as there have been human eyes to observe rainbows, there have been human stories to explain/assign them meaning. I am not so full of hubris, that I am unable to acknowledge that a myth can contain truth(s) without being factual. Or think it impossible for someone having waited out a severe storm, such as the residence of Oregon's Aumsville who suffered a tornado this week, to see a rainbow and find it both comforting and as "evidence" of better things (at least weather wise). No-one can claim ownership, and attempting to claim ownership seems very silly, especially in this instance because a rainbow is an optical and meteorological phenomenon. My $0.02, anyway.

Now, if you played this smart like a republican (yes, I just wrote that), you'd promise to give them back the rainbow, in exchange for DADT, ENDA, marriage, and then, when the ink was dry, you'd keep using it anyway! Suckahs!

ps...I will be really sad if the rainbow goes back to being associated with appallingly decorated nurseries and Lisa Frank stickers...I *like* seeing it on coffee shop windows and church signs...

Oh yeah, Dr. Morse? Well I am extremely upset that NOM has started this "Ruth Institute" project. I want my name back!

My name is Ruth, and I have always been proud of what it represents. The book of Ruth was one of only two books in the Bible about women (the other book is Esther). In the book of Ruth, she bucks tradition after her husband dies. Instead of returning to her parents household and leaving her mother-in-law Naomi alone and homeless, she goes road-tripping. She takes Naomi back to her home country, and even goes begging in the grain fields to make sure the older woman is protected, fed, and sheltered. In return, God rewards Ruth with a hot second husband - the kind, wealthy Boaz.

Ruth through the ages has become synonymous with caring and friendship for the less-privileged. For example, the word ruthless describes someone who is without compassion, and the House of Ruth is a well-known charity that helps battered women.

So how the heck did these people choose Ruth for their Institute? They are working to deny human rights and loving companionship to a less powerful part of society. You don't get to steal my name and subvert it for your ruthless purposes!

@3: Exactly. Just who is preventing these dopes from using the rainbow anyway they see fit? I hope they wear rainbow buttons and bumper stickers everywhere they go, and start having parades in June where they wave their rainbow flags from their convertibles, and stick them to their roller-skates as they bump & grind down main street to Gloria Gaynor tunes.

I'd just love to see NOM waving rainbow flags in some half-baked attempt to try to reclaim rainbows. They're absolutely right: nobody owns the rainbow. They are free to use the rainbows however they like.

But wait. For decades, rainbows have been defined as a gay-rights symbol. We can't just let them waddle their way in and redefine rainbows for everybody! We must protect the sanctity of rainbows!
