Thank You for Making Strangercrombie a Success!

...And to all, a goodzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....
  • ...And to all, a goodzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....

Thank you for making Strangercrombie 2010 such a great success! You raised tens of thousands of dollars for two great local charities, and you bought a buttload of sex toys*, celebrity encounters, hot dates, and one-of-a-kind items to make it happen!

Big thanks, of course, to the businesses and creative folks who donated to Strangercrombie. I hope you'll give them your business—they deserve it.

Thanks to Kelly O, who did such a fine job art-directing David Belisle's Night Before Strangercrombie photo shoot. Nancy Hartunian coordinated this monster with her usual good humor and eerie sense of calm. Marty Griswold and our entire sales team rustled up virtually everything in the catalog out of thin air in a very bad economy, the web team dragged the fine art of charity auctioneering boldly into the future, and the editorial staff wrote up the catalog text eagerly and without complaint. They are all fucking champs.

But most of all, thanks to all of you. Every year, Stranger readers and staffers get together and show that we're not just an angry band of complainers and ne'er-do-wells. And it never fails: Every year, I'm blown away by your kindness and generosity. We're a community that gets good shit done. I'm proud of all of you, and I couldn't be more pleased to be a part of the extended Stranger family.

If you didn't win your auction, I'd like to gently remind you that you can still donate to Strangercrombie via our PayPal button. That will stay open through 5 pm Friday; if you give $20 or more to get your very own much-coveted Strangercrombie Donor 2010 badge.

Good work, everyone. You made Seattle a better place today.

* Actually, you bought way more sex toys than a single butt could stand at once.

I put in what I thought were very competitive bids for 15 things, and got creamed in all of them. My only consolation is that my last second bid on one thing caused an extra $10 to be donated to charity.

@1: yeah, sniping by those with deep pockets in the last 30 seconds is common. And frustrating. That's why I try not to ever get excited by any of the auctions.

Having said that, I finally was the high bidder in something. Woo!

Thank jebus we don't have to look at those terrible photo shoot pictures anymore. I probably would have donated some cash if those pictures weren't so terrible. Jen managed to find 1 okay one -- the naked guy sleeping in the hat in front of the fire place. The rest were just deplorable... how did they end up being published?

Next year let's put a little more effort into it than a little person, 5 random people of varying attractiveness off the hill willing to take their clothes off, $30 in the holiday aisle at QFC, and a couple bottles of Jack.

@3 - you're talking about real humans, NONE of which are "deplorable"

Being mean and nasty, anonymously, is a better definition of deplorable. And it's boring.

I bet you think the models should look like this. Or this. I'm sorry to tell you that's NEVER what Strangercrombie has been about, nine years running, so you probably should drink a nice, big cup of shut-the-hell-up

so psyched i got the package i was bidding on! @1 - i swear it wasn't me ... i posted my final bid when there were still 17 minutes left because i had to leave the house. i returned two hours later with fingers crossed (but not optimistic - there were 26 bids on the same package before i even posted mine). surprise, and yay! i got it!

thanks, stranger, for putting together such amazing bundles! it was hard to settle on one.

this rules.

@5 don't get pissy with me because you directed shitty photos. And, since you obviously need help interpreting criticism, I never said anything about your models as humans; only that the photos are deplorable. And I stand by it. I know nothing about your models as humans other than they seem to have little dignity and/or self-worth, but that is a personal judgement based on my only evidence of their actions as people.

What the fuck are those pictures you linked? The Kardashian's? Really? Did you get them from browsing TMZ? I think you read this jerk wrong. Not everyone who is an asshole is an idiot; in fact it may be quite the opposite.

PS you're the 3rd Slog poster I've managed to successfully troll this week. What did people do for fun before the internet?

Glad you're proud of being a troll.

Nothing more needs to be said.

I thought the photos were fun! and inspired even, in the twisted way the Stranger excels in. Maybe not quite gay enough for my tastes, but fun enough.

Rock on Kelly O!

Fuck the haters, Kelly O. I loved the pictures, just like I do every year.

While I am honestly ambivalent about this years set of photos, they were really in the spirit of previous years and quite professional. Ok I liked some of them because they were funny, but I didn't Have cleavage sex dreams this year like before, are you fucking happy now?????

Jesus Christ, people. What the hell is wrong with everyone? Why are we fighting like this? Why can't we all get along, and focus on the real problem with these photos?

Which is insufficient closeups of nipples.

Nipples, people! Nipples!

Kelly O, you did great, it was a great project and the photos were fine. Be happy. Ignore the Negative Nellies who hate everything.

But seriously. Nipples.

(Yes, I am just slightly drunkie).

(Nipples)

Fuck yeah, Fnarf. Nipples! Especially gurl nipples.

Seriously, Kelly O, what Lo said. Fuck the hatin' trolls. The shoot was great as always.

I do admire the effort to take a fresh approach each year. Among my favorites, 2007 and 2006 were very nice, and the ladies of 2008 I liked such an awful lot.

Doesn't the bidding for Strangercrombie essentially work the same way as it does for Ebay?

If so, then there's no point putting in big bids on things at the last second, it won't have any effect whatsoever on the outcome. In fact, putting a big bid in on the opening 20 seconds would have exactly the same effect as putting a big bid on the closing 20 seconds.

stinkbug 19
@18: No, it's not the exact same effect, when you consider how all bidders react to the large bid.

Does it matter when, or how, the highest bids were submitted? It's a charity auction! High bids are great. The more collected for these amazing causes, the better the end result.

@19,
So everyone's bid was viewable by everyone else all the time?

In most online auctions, nobody's bid is visible. You only get to see what the current selling price is, but the highest actual bid could potentially be hundreds or thousands of dollars higher than what's visible.

If the highest bid was $2,000 and the current visible bid is $20. Then it wouldn't make any difference if a bunch of people started bidding 25, then 30, then 35, then 40... and so on and so on. All their bids would be meaningless and nothing would change... the highest bidder would still win, even if they made their bid days ago.

I agree though that it's for charity so if any final prices go up, well, so much the better.

Congrats Stranger/Sloggers on your charity fundraising!

I'm just bummed that as a Canadian, I was prevented from bidding on a Hump-y Dinner with Dan Savage as part of a surprise trip to Seattle for my boyfriend.....I know our money looks funny but it converts at about par these days....just sayin'

So now that it's all over, how do we get our awesome prizes? Any chance of picking them up at tonight's get-together? Getting to the Stranger offices on a weekday might be a bit of a trick for those of us with M-F jobs...

BTW, if next year's Strangercrombie had an auction for the ability to selectively turn off posting privileges of the comment trolls, I'd soooo bid the hell out of that.

All my bids went down in flames, too, even the last-minute ones. Dammit, snipers!
