Your New Favorite Curry Shack

Posted by on Thu, Dec 2, 2010 at 12:52 PM

This did not exist yesterday:

thai_curry_simple_menu.jpg

It’s the new menu at Thai Curry Simple on Capitol Hill (the first shockingly delicious/affordable TCS is in Chinatown), which is opening today in the shack at 12th Avenue and East Madison Street. To start, it’ll be open on weekdays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and on weekend nights from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., says co-owner Mark Pinkaow.

Originally, it was going to be serve all veggie food, but Pinkaow says they were bombarded with meat requests so they tossed in some animal stuffs. But the menu could change.

The basics: The curries are made of freshly mashed spices from Thailand; you get your choice of brown rice or jasmine rice; outside of the shack are a few of TCS's signature birdhouses; Mark and co-owner Picha are the nicest humans on the planet; and YAY!

I'll second that the owners are some of the nicest people you will ever meet.

A thousand times yes. I wish there was one near me. The only drawback to this that I can see is that Mark can't be in both restaurants at the same time.

If they are offering a wide rice noodle one instead of rice, HIT THAT.

totally psyched as i love the chinatown v.1 of TCS.

Isn't the lot it's sitting on going to get razed for condos or something? Or is that on hold indefinitely, like the rest...

Anyone know the corn starch status of their curries? I love curry, but hate that many (possibly needlessly) include something I am allergic to.

To eat veggie curry is to live a joyless life. Sacrifice a chicken, and you have a feast to inspire dancing.

The hours at the C.T. location are crazy also. I like to think that they need lots of time to pound those spices in to curry.

You know, I've been to the ID location twice with high hopes, but I just didn't find the food there that good. It's definitely a good deal and you get a good amount of food for your money. But both times, I wasn't compelled to finish it, not because I was full, but because it just had kind of a weird flavor to me.

Who knows, maybe it's actually more authentically Thai than all the other Thai curry I've had in Seattle for the last 18 years. I just know that I didn't really like either the Panang or Massamun. That said, I'll probably still try a few other ones, because it is a really good deal, I do like the concept, and I really want to like the food. I just can't quite understand at this point why this place has been so well regarded (beyond its style and the price of the food).

I just now had their green chicken curry, from their ID location. And it was fantastic. Brown rice made it nice and chewy. Better like it hot, however, because that's the way it comes.
