Via the Seattle Times:

The inquest jury will decide whether Officer Ian Birk had a sufficient reason to use deadly force when he shot Williams Aug. 30 on a sidewalk at Boren Avenue and Howell Street near downtown Seattle.

The shooting has unleashed growing criticism as a series of disclosures have raised questions about Birk's action. Birk reported he fired because Williams didn't respond to three commands to drop a knife he was carrying.

The inquest will be the public's first chance to hear testimony from Officer Birk, Williams's family, and the witnesses to his death, as well as see evidence from the crime scene. As this isn't the first—or most recent—documented instance of SPD officers violently clashing with civilians, it'll be an interesting inquest to follow.
