This was the song that introduced me to Tim. It's was very first Christmas song that I really could relate to. It embodies the true meaning of Christmas to us godless sentimental heathens.

The "song" which introduced me to Tim Minchin was "Storm," which isn't exactly so touching and endearing but is fucking wonderful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0W7Jbc_V…

"White Wine in the Sun" makes me weepy every time I hear it.

Festivus is nice, too. I like New Years!

Great song. It really sums up well how I feel about Christmas. Thanksgiving was hard, chairs that will remain forever empty, and Christmas will be no different. And, I am still looking forward to it. Yep, I really like Christmas.

@6 That's why it's important to treasure the time we have with the people we love.

When I hear about all the homophobic parents that disown their gay children I think of this part of the song.

"And you're too young to know
But you will learn someday
That wherever you are and whatever you face
These are the people who'll make you feel safe in this world"

Tim has a much better understanding of family and morals than any of those "moral" homophobic christians ever could.

Never heard of him, but am glad I have now. Thanks for posting this.

I agree, Vince. Realtionships are the things to treasure, and the only things really worth having and building in this life.

Cheers!

Yes, this song definitely makes us feel better about Christmas as our consumer culture's crowning moment of glorious materialism. My kid. My family. My memories. My favorite airline to mom and dad's. My glass of fill-in-the-blank white wine. Don't pop my bubble with any religious talk about social responsibility or needy people or God's vision of justice or angels and stuff. None of that is nearly sentimental enough.

That was really sweet, I didn't know Tim sang anything as serious as this. I guess I've only seen the funnier, crazier songs of his.

Now damn you Dan, you know what I'm singing right now and it's all your fault!

So sweet! A nice rebalancer against the "Cat's in the Cradle" view.

That was really quite beautiful. That's what Christmas is about for me as well, and I guess for many of us (who are lucky enough to have decent relationships with our blood families).

Serious is a large part of Tim Minchin's repertois

Nice. Forces the thinking to do more of it, forces the bigots to run and hide.

Goddamnit, Dan, now I'm sobbing on my laptop, and my computer already had problems.

AND I'll probably be spending Christmas alone.

Why can't my job have decent Christmas songs like this playing on the PA? Just today, I heard, among other things, three bad Josh Groban wannabes, four equally awful renditions of Angels We Have Heard on High, and a version of Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree that made me want to drink myself unconscious, or, alternatively, bash my head into a wall to the same effect.

Dang, that was very nice. Pretty much summed up my thoughts on the holiday, except in verse, with music and a better voice (and piano playing) than I could hope to do.

I've only heard 'Pope Song' before, and keep telling myself to dig deeper.

Thanks for reminding me how much I love Tim Minchin and especially this song. My other favorite is "If I Didn't Have You", mostly because it doesn't make me cry as much as this one does.

My parents didn't make me feel safe growing up. So the song just made me feel meh. Good song but just reminds me of what my life is missing.

I agree with a lot of what Tim's saying in the song, but... I really don't like Christmas.

Nice.

This just sent me on a half-hour spree of Tim Minchin videos. He is in equal parts hysterical, insane, and profound.

@4, thanks for putting me onto "Storm", loved it.

Back at you with his song "Ten Foot C*ck And A Few Hundred Virgins"

It took me a few minutes to figure out where I had heard Tim Minchin before - a few weeks back b3ta.com featured his Pope Song - which would also be a fine candidate for an "and you shall know them by their...." slot. Tim Minchin is just so versatile!
