Mashable links to a new report that says nearly a billion dollars' worth of e-books were sold in 2010.

2010 will end with $966 million in eBooks sold to consumers. By 2015, the industry will have nearly tripled to almost $3 billion, a point at which the industry will be forever altered.

The Forrester blog suggests that books are on the verge of a tipping point that could end with publishing becoming "the most digital of all media industries, even if it got the latest start." That seems hyperbolic to me, if just because the publishing industry will fight this every step of the way. But if there are changes on the publishing side of things to embrace e-books, it's a possibility.
