Time Traveler Caught on Film in 1928?

Posted by on Wed, Oct 27, 2010 at 2:26 PM

This has been circling the usual internet crazy sites lately, and now it's finally made the conspiracy big time that is Disinformation. Apparently, in the new DVD release of Charlie Chaplin's 1928 The Circus, you can "clearly" see a female extra walking by talking into a cell phone. Here's the video:

The YouTube comments would be hilarious, if so many of them didn't seem to be serious:

I bet anything that "woman" is really Nikola Tesla if you pause the video at 3:35 you clearly see he/she is holding a black box to her face. The nose, chin & right cheekbone look to be that of Tesla when he was in his 60's.

Tesla was also a huge Chaplin fan!

Nikola Tesla Predicted the Cell Phone in 1909.

Also the person who first thought of the concept we now call the "internet ("world system") was yup you guessed it, Nikola Tesla.

It's a conspiracy, you guys! Someone tie it in to 9/11, quick!

She is not an extra in Chaplin's film. She is some Angeleno caught on film (and maybe doesn't want to be) in January 1928, captured in some reportage of the premiere of The Circus.

It is not a new release, either, it's part of a box set of The Chaplin Collection, released years ago by mk2 Editions and Warner Brothers. The track is in Disc 2, Special Features, "The Hollywood premiere (1928)."

If she really was a time traveler with a cell phone she wouldn't be talking on it. nobody else would have a cell phone in 1928.

@4 is correct. No cell towers, no nothing. It would be pretty useless.

If you look carefully at the end you will see that her head goes back and to the right. Back... and to the right.

@4, 5 - You assume she's the only time traveler. One should always time travel in teams of at least four, and a small, portable cell phone tower is among the items recommended to bring with you. I think Emily Post wrote about time travel.

And Fnarf is right. This is, after all, the set of a Charlie Chaplin movie. This is a woman who broke the laws of time and space to see Charlie Chaplin; she no doubt loves fart jokes.

she's clearly a timelord. their cellphones can call any time. (also, mary poppins was a timelord. didn't you know? maybe that's just old timelord mary poppins, timelording around.)

@9 - If that's Mary Poppins, she's let herself go. A spoonful of sugar really adds up, doesn't it?

It's a white, 4th generation iPhone!

And the only 9/11 connection I can make is that it's posted to Slog by some douchebag who was apparently raped and murdered by a conspiracy theorist in 1990.

Seriously let it go. Your cheap shots make you seem more obsessed than the worst 'truther' out there.

If I had time travel capability, I'd go give it to my 15-year-old self along with the Morning After Pill and coordinates to 1065 Summit Drive, Beverly Hills.

Like most time travelers, she was attempting to kill Hitler, but the time machine's moustache-detector sent her to the wrong place.

And for anyone who's interested (i.e. no one), L. Frank Baum described a cell phone in a book 18 years before this movie. The Emerald City of Oz had cell phones and CCTV (on a flat screen, no less). Of course it was all "magic," but I think we all know Ozma of Oz was a time traveler.

@18: so true about Ozma. And a trans-woman (girl?), too. Baum was a man ahead of his time.

I've often thought that time travel is a reality, and that people from wherever the machine or technique originated have been visiting "the present" for a long time.

How else can we explain the presence of so much evil -- Nazis, for instance, and so much stupidity -- right wingers, for instance, in "today's" world?

They're normally very careful not to disclose their presence -- thank god!, but every so often, something happens. Lenny of Venice comes to mind, and so do many mathematicians and physicists. All of them may not be time travelers, but maybe visitors called on people of the present and planted the seeds of ideas or gave hints to assist them.

Too bad they don't have a cure for right wingers. That's what we really need.

This is the bee-yotch who keeps calling me, trying to sell me an alarm system. She traveled back in time to 1928 so she could get around the "Do Not Call" registry.

By cleverly reversing the numbers, 1928, we can deduce with some certainty that she came from the year 8291. Elementary my dear Watson.
