A New, Fun Way to Pass Judgment on Your Friends

Posted by on Thu, Oct 14, 2010 at 2:35 PM

Voters! Come out and play-ay.
  • Voters! Come out and play-ay.
Today, the Washington Bus—a progressive young voters group—launched My Ballot, a Facebook application that guts the sanctity of the private ballot process by allowing voters to see how their friends are planning to vote. My Ballot uses a your ZIP code to prepare a virtual ballot with all statewide and local races and ballot measures you'll face on the November ballot, along with short descriptions of all the races. You simply fill out your virtual ballot and submit it, thereby sharing your selections with friends on Facebook.

Big Brother overtones aside, Washington Bus spokesman Toby Crittenden says it's a necessary (and completely voluntary) tool to turn voting into a viral, peer-to-peer social event. "The number one reason people don't vote is because they think they're going to make a mistake," Crittenden. "And we know people take cues about voting from friends and family. This application takes the fear out of it by allowing people to see how their friends are voting. It also gives them access to election information to find out more about the races and reminds them to vote."

And if you don't agree with your friends' fake Facebook votes, you can slowly distance yourself and find new friends with better political views.

My Ballot is over here. For guidance on how to fake vote on Facebook, check out our election endorsements.

Doesn't seem to be working.

Lame that they want permission to post to my wall whenever. I guess I'll try it since they can always be removed. Still, poor decision, WB.

I for one will not be using my 25 fake accounts for this.

Unless I already have ...

;-)

my only real problem is it's by zip - people in Fremont (98103) are not the same as people in Wallingford (98103). We're edgier and way more in your face and they're hopped up on granola.

Why do they not list Inslee as a choice?

@4, they only do statewide races. You can unbunch your panties any old time.

The thing does work, it's just the Slog's link to it that was briefly broken.

@2, that's what every FB app disclaimer says. FB rules. FB has always operated on the principle that the reason for FB is to get you to sign up for spam.

@1,3, we were having some internet freakouts earlier with comments and links. Everything should be working now.

Oh, please. I bet two-thirds of the Facebook "voters" never get around to actually voting for real.

It's still not working for me. Clicking "start" just gets me to "start" again.

Also, Fnarf, not so. The application can choose which permissions it wants. Many do not ask for post-on-your-wall ability.

This whole "open blahblah in another frame" link is what's causing the trouble for me, I think, even when I turn off pop-up blocking. Maybe it doesn't work right on Safari?

God FB is pervy.

@9 is correct. But most ignore that, cause they are as pervy as FB is.

Call me old fashioned, but I don't even tell my partner who I'm voting for. I'll be damned if I'll tell the whole fucking world via Facebook. Who/what I vote for is none of your fucking business. This is one of the stupidest ideas I've heard in a while.

Oh, Washington Bus. At least the Stranger thinks you're clever.

Or they used to. Which is still something.

I love how when an error is pointed out, the crack staff at the Stranger fixes the error and deletes the comment without any word. That's accountability!

I wonder how many young people will mistake "voting" on Farcebook for having actually voted.

I actually thought this was a pretty great idea--put me in with Scalia on this one that it's necessary to have some civic courag… in a democracy, and public voting goes back a long way in this country--but I am not happy with the actual execution. Rather than providing a great neutral app to help people have a public discussion, Washington Bus is using this as a tool very much like a push-poll: using loaded language in a guerrilla campaign to sway minds. The one that got me was I-1100, which they describe thusly:
Along with I-1105, I-1100 proposes to radically alter the state's relationship with liquor sales and distribution. I-1100 would roll back the state's role, as well as reduce the revenue generated from liquor sales going towards public goods.

They use exactly the same language for I-1105. These are two very different initiatives, but Washington Bus wants them both to fail and so paints them both with the same brush. Bullshit. Cienna, I know that you're not 100% behind the SECB endorsement of I-1100, but please refrain from passing along shit like this in the future.
