I always wondered why they made bus passes so visually attractive. I held on to mine from Pittsburgh in the 90's and early 2000's for a long time because they were so pretty. Kinda wish I had kept them.

They weren't quite as awesome as these, though.

Those passes are beautiful.

The price for a weekly pass in 1931, 1939, and 1944 is the same: $1.

I assume they were so (relatively) elaborate because they were trying to thwart counterfeiters?

Those are awesome. There's a MUNI pass art project doing the rounds here too—to be honest I'd rather just see the collection than see them incorporated into his art, but there's still a lot to look at.
