AIG and Initiative 1082

Posted by on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 9:56 AM

In an endorsement interview at The Stranger offices the other day, a backer of Initiative 1082, which would privatize the state's workers' compensation program, mocked how often 1082 opponents say that big, bad AIG stands to benefit at the expense of Washington workers if 1082 passes.

"AIG, AIG," he intoned.

Looks like 1082 opponents are more than happy to have him—and everyone else—repeating those three letters as often as possible in the run-up to the election. Here's the first commercial from Vote No on 1082:

It's sad seeing AIG gone from the front of Manchester United's shirts. It was the perfect marriage of evils.

Oh, the stories I could tell. . . .

But it's privileged, so I can't. Sorry.

I really get peeved when I hear the backers of this initiative talk about how Workers' Compensation insurance should have competition...for me, workers' comp should be about the worker, not about the profit. Hopefully the AIG angle works.

This initiative is such an obvious scam, it's amazing it made it to the ballot. The signature gatherers must have either told some real whoppers, or they only gathered from Mercer, Vashon & Bainbridge. It's a classic "Capital Steals from Labor" hustle. I'm surprised Mudede hasn't jumped all over it. Any time an insurance company gets involved in public policy, you can be certain that lies, theft & extortion are soon to follow.
