Being Gay In Indiana Kinda Sucks—But Should It Suck Harder? Let's Vote!

Posted by on Tue, Sep 21, 2010 at 4:52 AM

indianaweak.jpg
Indiana Week In Review—a public affairs program on the PBS affiliate in Indianapolis—is conducting a little internet poll. Gay marriage is already illegal in Indiana. But Indiana Week In Review wants to know if random visitors to its website think "Indiana lawmakers [should] consider a permanent ban on gay marriage?" Presumably that means a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. Right now "YES" is way ahead with 66% of the vote. Take a second to visit WFYI's website and vote no in their idiotic and insulting little poll.

Can you imagine if a PBS station posted a poll asking if there should be a ban on Jews getting married. I get that this is a hot button issue in some of the more backward states. Still, it seems like people are just more comfortable considering reduced rights and citizenship for gay folks, but would be offended if such a question were being asked about any other group...except maybe Muslims.

50-50 now, which leads me to wonder if the previous result was 2 votes vs. 1 vote. If so, it should be pretty easy to swing.

let 'em do it. Sounds like another Constitutional challenge that a smart Federal judge will have to overturn to me. Oh, and of course, I voted NO.

Well that didn't take long to turn around. It's now 31% yes 69% no.

AHAHAHAHAHAAA!!! I just learned something interesting. When it says "Please submit only one poll response" what it apparently means is "please submit only one poll response PER BROWSER". I just voted 3 times. Once for IE, once for Firefox and once for Chrome.

It's at 62%...I wonder how many people purposely visit the site weekly so that they can vote on those polls

64% no. These unscientific polls are bullshit. Without random sampling, they don't mean anything, and a good journalism wouldn't present a bullshit poll like that as anything remotely factual or newsworthy. It's just a gimmick to make you pay attention to their website. And we are all falling for it.

Dan,

Just listened to the podcast and subscribed to your youtube channel. What a great idea and great video. Terry really does have a beautiful mouth. I hope your video and others will reach the intended audience. Thanks for all the great work you do!!

@12 No doubt Indiana's got more than it's share of bassackwards morons, but what makes you think the American Family Association isn't also sending its minions to that poll from all over the country?

You do know this reflects the reality that Indiana lawmakers like to do shit like this? That the NPR station is just wearily saying, "should they do this fucking AGAIN?"....

This NPR TV news org deserves our clicks for doing some original statewide programming, even if we've visited in a Sloggy huff.

Does anyone else find it sad that this is on a Public TV website? Also, did anyone read any of their previous polls? Like "Will Indiana gain Red State Status in November?" as though this is like getting a promotion. WTF?

Also, seems we may have crashed their server. The site is now down.

COMTE 38
@1:

Except of course that many of those who oppose Marriage Equality for Gays probably WOULD also oppose it for Jews, and minorities, and Catholics, and Muslims, and pretty much anyone who wasn't a rabid, right-wing, fundamentalist WASP, if they thought they could get away with it.

It's just that they DO still think they might have a shot of getting away with it so far as GLBT's are concerned, so...

38, Right wing politicians may think that about other groups, but they keep it to themselves. They feel free to openly, and publicly call for lesser rights for gays.

And to add, PBS stations feel free to ask internet poll questions about the gay minority that they wouldn't dare to ask about any other minority.

Flying Monkey of Froth 44
What is the purpose of mobilizing the flying monkeys to vote (and multi-vote) in this poll? Is it to make it look like gays have more support than they actually do, therefore convincing those who are on the fence about gays to support gays instead of opposing them? Or is it just to fuck shit up because we can? Here's a hint. . .anything above 80% "no" on that poll makes it obvious that some group of people has been fucking with it. And therefore give it less credibility. Come on, like when Iran rigs the elections, they don't rig it to look like 91% voted for Ahmadinejad, because everyone will know it's fake. 80%+ of the people in this country don't even agree that Obama was born in this country!

But if our purpose is just to fuck shit up, keep on going and have fun.
