Today in Dogs Dressed Like First Ladies of Yesteryear

Posted by on Fri, Sep 10, 2010 at 2:18 PM

Here's Bunny the Dog (a Boston terrier/Pug mix) as Mary Todd Lincoln (a shopaholic who threw potatoes at her husband).

scaled.Bunny_Mary_Todd.jpg

Costume by Jake Nelson, and anyone tempted to allege animal cruelty should note that Bunny can't be anywhere near as uncomfortable as Jake, who's wedged under the skirt to power Bunny Mary Todd on and off the Bumbershoot stage. They were both rewarded with treats. (Also, seriously, if you put in the time to train your dog well enough that it's able to sit still on a hoop-skirt platform, you deserve to do just that at least once.)

Thank you for posting this amazing photo! Bunny & Barry as Mary Todd & Abe were definitely the highlight of this already top notch and SOLD OUT "Why Vampires? Why Abraham Lincoln? Why Now?" program expertly hosted and moderated by the Vis-à-vis Society for Bumbershoot 2010!

Oh sure, go ahead and laugh, but if somebody dressed a dog up as Michelle Obama, y'all would have a conniption fit.

That's Barry's Bunny? I love Bunny very, very much. I was pleasantly surprised to see her a while back coming out of the Spanish class before mine. I would be honored to have her throw a potato at me.

@10 This was one of the three programs that comprised the "Why This? Why That? Why Now?" program on Bumbershoot's "Words & Ideas" stage. Different trends were explored each day of the festival from 1pm-2pm at the Leo K Theater.

more info about "Why Vampires? Why Abraham Lincoln? Why Now?":
If you wonder why vampires currently rule the pop culture landscape and are a national teenage obsession, or why Abraham Lincoln is a hot-topic for museums, literature, visual art, movies, and theater, then this is the program for you. The Great Emancipator and heartthrob vampires will share the stage for perhaps the first time in this fun and informative discussion featuring Brian Thornton, author of 101 Things You Didn't Know About Lincoln: Loves And Losses! Political Power Plays, Lincoln enthusiast Barry Wright, actual teenage vampire enthusiasts Elle and Noah, and Tracy Rector, executive director of Longhouse Media. Dedicated to poetic analysis of the everyday "Why This, Why That, Why Now" is a series of lectures moderated by the Vis-à-Vis Society that explores trends in internet, media, pop culture, and the culinary world. Join us and learn more!

The other days topics were:
"Why Failure? Why Cuteness? Why Now?"

and
"Why Bacon? Why Cupcakes? Why Now?"

I cannot tell if Mary Dogg Lincoln is wearing gloves. Apparently, she was as enamored of gloves as Imelda is of shoes. Per the net: "She spent greater amounts on clothes than any other First Lady; she bought 300 pairs of lace gloves in four months, leaving the Lincoln family in tremendous debt."

Dogs dressed like historical first ladies. So profoundly arbitrary, yet makes perfect sense. Genius.
