It never ceases to amaze me that people like Terry Jones and Fred Phelps can spend so much time preaching about their "God of love," and then turn around and spew such venom and hatred. They're basically saying that they believe in God, they believe God is omnipotent, they believe in heaven and hell, and yet by persecuting people they don't understand, they're pretty much saying God can't handle this on his own. Isn't judgment supposed to be God's gig, or did I read a different bible?

This really hits the nail on the head. Most American Christians look on Jesus as some sort of WWF hero. Our Western Cultural roots go beyond Jesus, to the Classical Pagans, where Hercules/Heracles was worshiped. Like JC, he was a mix of mortal/immortal, and people prayed to him the same way modern American Christians pray to JC: for personal strength/blessing & conquering your enemies. He was also a god "of the people," being a lesser god, and part mortal, he had a closer & deeper connection to the plebes, where Zues/Jupiter was connected to the State & it's leaders.

That's what most people really want out of a God-- the ability to understand them, to help them, and to kick the people they hate's ass. Ethics & morality is just parsley.

It wouldn't be so bad, if they'd just eat the damned parsley, but no, it just sits on the side of the plate while they stuff their faces with the other stuff.
