That face plant into the pole looks brutal.

The lady running into the post at 0:47 is unfortunate.

You'd think they'd bolt their furniture down or something. I mean, I get that they probably want to rearrange rooms all the time, but there could be a system to temporarily lock things in. Because they're on a boat.

Mother Nature is awesome.

Clearly this is an extraction attempt in progress.

Yeah... Aren't things on boats usually bolted to the floor for this very reason? May I just say... duh?

The slide to the right, after the face plant, with the fat guy in the middle of all that stuff is my favorite part.

And after all that, you just know the biggest complaint was from some old geezer whose game of shuffleboard got totally screwed up...

It's weird to see this from a fixed camera POV. If a person were holding a camcorder, they would be leaning to try and compensate, so you would get some idea of the angle at which the ship is heeling over. It must be 30 degrees or so.

Cruise ships usually ply calm coastal waters and have excellent weather forecasts available, so there's less thought given to bolting things down. This must have been an unusual confluence of swells from different directions, where they can suddenly reinforce each other and mount up in height when crests and troughs are in phase. This can happen in mid-ocean with no warning. There have been cases of tankers and freighters cracking in half when a fifty- or hundred-foot wave rises amidships, leaving bow and stern supported only by air, or bow and stern held up by two successive crests and the middle suspended over a trough.

in the extended version of this footage, faceplant-lady looks as if she's been enjoying her time at the bar for quite a while, seemingly unconcerned with the events that are about to unfold. while her nose may be broken, at least it was probably not as painful to her as we would imagine.

additionally, here is some heavy machinery on a lower level flying around in the same heavy seas: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEWIxm2Vq…

@18, GAHHH. Is that fuel from the forklift all over the floor at the end? That's just nasty. That huge cabinet, presumably full of stuff (tools? paint?) flying across the room is not pretty. And that forklift must weigh at least a ton.

Found an accident report for this event, which comments on the need for heavy weather best practices, including bolting shit down. No kidding!

"The company offered passengers a 25 per cent discount on future cruises, as well as counselling for those who needed."

That's big of 'em.

It's called "stowing for sea". Cruise ships that huge probably don't get a lot of seas that make them need it. Welcome to the ocean.

"'Wouldst thou', so the helmsman answered,
'Know the secret of the sea?
Only those who brave its dangers,
Comprehend its mystery'"
