Reading Tonight: The Unknown Rocker

University Book Store hosts Dave Mustaine tonight. Mustaine, who was apparently in some kind of rock band or something, will sign copies of his book Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir. Has anybody heard of this guy?

Pilot Books hosts what looks like a lovely group reading tonight. Alexis Wolf, Craven Rock, and Joshua James are three zine-makers. Wolf is the author of a literary zine titled Ilse Content, which is up to issue #9. The impossibly named Craven Rock has written a zine titled Eaves of Ass, which is better than the title would have you believe. And Joshua James makes a great zine called Basic Paper Airplane. This could possibly wind up being the best reading of the week.

And Ralph Metzner reads at Elliott Bay Book Company tonight. Birth of a Psychedelic Culture: Conversations about the Harvard Experiments, Leary, Millbrook and the Sixties is about how the author was there at the dawning of the psychedelic age. Which means he's kind of responsible for Phish.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here.

I suppose anybody who was legendarily enough of a drunk to get kicked out of early Megadeth for drinking is a drunk worth meeting.

Wait, er, I meant Metallica. I fear my heavy metal cred just vanished in a flurry of jazz hands.

That's cute, Paul. "Anyone heard of this guy?" You're a laugh riot.

@2 Too bad he killed his band in one quick album. They were going up. Reached mainstream success with Countdown to Extintion, then...crash and burn in the flames of mellow suckiness that was Youthenasia. Never trust a metal CD that has a sad song partly sung in French.

Looking up on Wiki, I didn't know they had really released anything since Cryptic Writings... The things you learn...

I guess your not into metal, but really? Metallica & Megadeth, 2 of the big 4 and possibly the most inticate and influential metal guitarist out there. You could save some time and Google it next time before asking the masses.

@7 - Knowing how to Google something does not constitute having ever heard of it before.

to be fair here's a nice youtube comment:

"If I had been born into Dave's situation (abusive father, running away from him, trying to make a living at freaking age 15, having been kicked out of the most successful heavy metal band ever) I would have fucking died a long time ago.

Instead, while being immature and hving an inability to just fucking let go (and who can blame him?) he set off to create one of the best bands I have ever listened to."

I take it some people liked Youthanasia. I burned that CD within a month, and never looked back. Cryptic Writings was just fucking awful too...luckily I was leery already and had the forethought not to buy it.

I would have thought a high school friendless virgin like paul would have known exactly who megadeath was.

Geez, Constant. You finally get a chance to write about someone I've actually heard of and you get all book-snobby about it.

Don't give a FUCK for Dave whatshisfuck, but I have some pointed questions for Ralph Metzner. HMMMMMM

Basically, Ralph generally feels that only the hoity toity chosen ones, academics and scientists and therapists, should use psychedelics.

You should read the section of The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test when the Merry Pranksters showed up at the Millbrook farm. HILARIOUS.

So the question would be:

"Ralph, do you feel that there is a place for the general public to use LSD, DMT, psilocybin, MDMA, or other psychedelics? Should these drugs be scheduled in such a way that they must be prescribed? Why?"

Wow... I hope the Mustaine comment was sarcasm. I am not a metal fan, but I have great respect for what he has achieved. They guy is a founding father of a major genre.
