Make Sure You're Hungover For PAX Tomorrrow

Posted by on Thu, Sep 2, 2010 at 3:44 PM

You may see (or be one of) over 400 drunk, awesome nerds in Hogwarts uniforms stumbling around Capitol Hill tonight. It's the Third Annual Triwizard Drinking Tournament for locals and folks who came to town early for this weekend's Penny Arcade Expo. They're raising money for Child's Play, issuing arcane challenges, and trying to score the most points for their House. Sadly, enrollment is closed, but boozy wizards are friendly wizards, so say hello and you might wake up between two Dumbledores tomorrow morning.

Oh, and hey—if you're going to PAX this weekend, you may want to pull down this iPhone app or this Android app to help you with scheduling and keeping track of what's where. Both free, both handy, both great for navigating the mega-show with whatever brainpower you've got left after tonight's Tournament.
Thanks, Slog Tipper Tom!

The Stranger Testing Department is Rob Lightner and Paul Hughes.

@2 "Dried up retarded cunt pickle" is the most creative insult I've seen all day!

PAX and wizards are both awesome. I'm not afraid to let the nerd-flag fly.

"you might wake up between two Dumbledores tomorrow morning"

I doubt there'll be many Dumbledore costumes so I propose an edit: "you might wake up in a Slytherin sandwich tomorrow morning".

COMTE 6
Mr. Poe, is that you?

Anyway, why do there not seem to be any middle-aged characters in HP ? Everyone appears to be either prepubescent or ancient , and neither demo really appeals to me. Of course, not that that would prevent a 40-something female to cos-play as Hermione or whatever (although that in itself brings up an entirely different set of issues), but seriously, WTF, JK?

(Admittedly, I've neither watched any of the films nor read any of the books, just seen a handful of stills, so maybe my impression is skewed).

If you go to PAX this weekend and play the live demo of a certain locally produced online game, I will probably be playing along with you, from our office...

I have never wished to live in Seattle more than at this moment. Drinking, nerdery, AND a good cause? I'd be all over that. Plus, my husband looks just like a middle-aged Harry Potter (complete with British accent), and I'd make a credible Hermione. Why must we wallow in the midwest?! Have fun, Seattle nerds!

Oh, the Triwizard Tournament is only the tip of the nerd-iceberg. PAX is taking over the DAR house at Harvard and Roy, Pike Street Fish Fry, Unicorn, and many other establishments starting about now.

Plus, I am the proud local who convinced the nerd pack to take over Frances Farmer Organ Karaoke! GLaDOS will be sung. In round if I have my way.

Then of course there's the scavenger hunt, and board game extravaganza...
Yeah, it'll be a nerdy time on the Hill tonight.

@6 - Ron's parents are middle-aged, and so are many of the teachers. Come to think of it, with a few exceptions, most of the Hogwarts students' parents are basically middle-aged.

Ron's parents and Remus Lupin are probably the most prominent middle-aged characters.

(The only reason I know this is because I want to play Molly Weasly.)

There's a live broadcast of X-Play on Sunday at 12:30. Wave if you're there.

McGee 13
Not only that but Gilderoy Lockheart, Sirius Black, Mad-Eye Mooney, Severeus Snape, and what's her face, the divination teacher, Emma Thompson played her. All pretty solidly middle-aged. Never read a HP book either but the roommate has. Boy has she.

Wish I'd heard about this earlier. Drunk HP nerds sounds like my kind of party.

I give my vote of confidence in Seattle's bar scene.
