People with "A" Names Against Pocket Dials

Posted by on Wed, Sep 1, 2010 at 10:00 AM

"People with names (either first or last) that begin with 'A' are disproportionately targeted, victimized, in this modern day scourge," says this small Facebook group created by a Seattle man named Adam. I confess, my phone—my pocket, my butt—is part of the problem.

It's like Mr. Savage said. Don't wanna eat the meat, don't order the steak. It's exactly the same thing. Where do they get off calling themselves A-whatever anyway? Who do they think they are?

HA! It's the "P" names on my phone that have the ass-calling pocket and ass dialing issue. It's like the "p" protrudes on the BB more than any other letter.

There aren't any Seattle men named Aaron to protest against Pocket Dials? You'd think they'd have it worse than the Adams.

I just created a contact named "AA" in my phone and put in my cell number, so my pocket dials just called myself. Worked like a charm.

I had no idea there were so many dumbasses out there. You don't own a belt holster for your phone? You don't lock the keyboard when you put it in your pocket/purse/whatever? Sheesh.

This was a huge 9and sometimes hilarious) problem until all my friends got smart phones. Screen locks and contact apps to the rescue.

Know who all of you pocket dial the most? 9-1-1!

If your ass holds down any key for most than a few seconds, it has a good chance of calling 911. But your ass isn't smart enough to know that you've called us. And then, we have to try and track you down to make sure you're not on fire or being kidnapped or some other such travesty. And, you and your ass, suck up emergency resources.

Please, please, please - lock your damn phone. And, while we're at it, if your phone's in your bag, purse, etc., your other crap in your bag/purse/whatever can also call 911. And, yes, your phone without minutes and/or a SIM card can also still pocket dial 911. Lock yer phones!

My phone has (as far as I can tell) a horrible design which allows it to be unlocked rather readily... as onion can attest.

I once tucked my phone into the front of my bike shorts for a quick ride home. As I was riding through busy traffic it worked its way down to my crotch, which somehow called 911, who of course called right back to ask what the fuck was going on. And yes, I felt like a dumbass. I still have no idea how it happened.

@ 3 -- A friend of mine got an email from an Aaron, politely requesting deletion of his name/number due to the above-mentioned pocket dialing problem.

pony @ 10 -- I'm no expert, but I think most phones are designed so you can call 9-1-1 even on a locked phone.

Ronk, I can't say anything about all phones, but it's true for BlackBerrys. But you can also turn that off.
