NOM's Gay-Baiting, Gay-Hating, SF-Bashing New Ad

Posted by on Wed, Sep 1, 2010 at 11:39 AM

Watch NOM's new ad...

...and then watch StopProp8.org's thoroughly brilliant takedown.

Taker-downer, you are adorable, but tilting your head back and forth does not disguise that you're looking at a teleprompter.

Side question: if you're in the career of doing voice overs, do you pick and choose which pieces you'll do? Do you think the two voices here support NOM or are they just hard working Americans trying to earn a buck?

Not only was that ad incredibly homophobic, I found it incredibly sexist as well.
Republicans (Fascists) want to be able to control women, as saying they has some specific roll in a family. that's so fucked up!

It's a fantatic takedown- but which piece of media will be reaching the people most needing to hear it the most? I really wish there was a way to guarantee that every time the NOM ad played anywhere the rebuttal would be played immediately after- but sadly that's not the case. Smear campaigns are effective for a reason.

Crazy and Scary!!! Oh, my!

Seriously, though, I like the male-male and female-female gender symbols as a watermark on the Constitution. We're having that done when we win, aren't we? Just to make it look official, I mean...

@5- I love that line. It makes it sound like the ruling is Gary Bussey.

@2:

One would HOPE the people voicing this ad aren't doing it "just for the money", and that any V-O performer who disagreed with its contents would refuse to do the work.

All I CAN tell you is that it wasn't done under a union contract...

I wonder whether the anti-gay-marriage crowd is self-aware that they're losing, if not today, then tomorrow? Stick a fork in them, they're done, as old bigots kick the bucket. Data here: http://bit.ly/itsinevitable

As a San Franciscan, I am way more offended by there bad photography!!! What is that opening shot? What's scary about cable cars?! Our crazy dangerous values would be much better represented by outdoor shots of Dore, Folsom, Castro, the Sutro "Bath House" (okay maybe not that one).

And that final shot? Come on! Is the Golden Gate bridge more menacing and scary when it's off center and significantly out of frame?

You may not like our values NOM, but do we really deserve to be butchered by crappy stock photography?

@9: As a San Franciscan, I am offended that they chose pictures shot on sunny days. The real San Francisco is more often gloomy and depressing than not.

@11 Not today! Eighty wonderful degrees.

@9 Also better represented by parking tickets, hipsters, and MUNI experiences.

Judge Walker wants to impose San Francisco values on the rest of the country! EVERYONE must grow embarrassing facial hair and commute to work on a fixie!

"Time is short to save traditional marriage."

...because once we allow gays to marry, all the straights lose their rights to do so, I guess...?

HAHA to our San Franciscans' comments. Ohhhh...the Golden Gate is some scary shit! Watch out for that cable car...that image is an islamofacistsocialistTM plot to make you wanna grab your same sex friends and make some sexy time.

But the response is far too logical and academic. We absolutely need more ads like the "clean coal" ads to make our point (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFJVbdiMg…). People listen to snark, scare tactics, and soundbites. Not so much a respectful, well-researched, and thorough take-down of lies.

I don't know if the voice overs came from real people... sounds more like the robot voices on my Garmin.

So, does anyone actually pay any attention to NOM besides their opponents? They're trolling y'all, and y'all are taking that hook hard.

@19:

Possibly, and especially if the spot was cut in a "Right to Work" state. But, like I said, it was definitely done non-union, so there's no compelling reason to think a union member would have scabbed, when the producers could easily have found non-union talent to do the work.

Photographic quality aside, San Francisco is beautiful! I honestly don't see how pictures of a beautiful city help NOM's cause.

Based on the NOM ad, I thought the judge sounded effin' brilliant. If they run that ad, I think they might actually be shooting themselves in the foot... When they called the ruling "crazy and scary" I actually kind of cracked up.

Hey thanks for posting my video! Yay. (BTW: It's Stop8.org, with no "Prop" in there.)

Regarding the observation that the video preaches to the choir: yes, yes it does. But as someone recently commented -- I think on this site? -- sometimes the choir needs something to sing about. So, my hope is that by by explaining the facts and unraveling NOM's lies, we can maintain our focus.

But of course, it's one-on-one conversations with family and friends and coworkers and neighbors that do the most good. You're all having those conversations, right?
