The Morning News: USA, USA, USA...

Posted by on Fri, Aug 27, 2010 at 8:57 AM

USA economy: Grew at a worrying 1.6 percent in the second quarter.

USA Federal Reserve: Signalling it's ready to do more.

USA Today: Laying off 130 people and de-emphasizing its print edition.

USA babies today: Fewer being born. Wonder why?

Seattle parking tickets: The city issued half a million in 2009, bringing in $18.4 million, and expects to make even more as pay-to-park stations flood neighborhoods.

Whatever, I'll just get my doctor to give me a disabled parking permit: Nope. They'll hide in the hedges and get you.

If the GOP wins the House: It's planning a ton of White House investigations, involving everything from the Black Panther Party to the bailouts.

Boeing: Delaying delivery of Dreamliner.

Trapped Chilean miners: Send up a video.

100,000: Expected at the Glenn Beck march on Washington.

And, wading into our week-long debate over the best live performance ever, Slog commenter Irena says you all need to click right here, right now, while Ignatz Mouse says Fnarf needs to get a grip with his Go-Betweens nonsense and start watching this at 1:55:

Oh, I'm never going to argue with James Brown. I saw him in the Showbox in ~1982. He was still doing the flying splits then. That drummer, that guitar. MONSTROUS. But the best part of the show was the two rows of Garfield girls in the audience beforehand, singing along with the PA. You think Aretha is hot when she sews together the beat with an "AAAAAWW" in "Respect", you should hear thirty schoolgirls hitting it note-perfect together.

In the 80s, a friend of mine had the job of handing the cape to the guy who would put the cape on the Godfather of Soul, and handing the giant mirror to the guy who held the giant mirror up for the Godfather of Soul.

Oh shit, that's from the TAMI show. I just watched that last week. It is simply fucking amazing. The Stones come on after James Brown and suck ass in comparison. Everyone put The TAMI Show on your Netflix queue right now.

The on-screen text says it is regarded as the "ultimate Rock n' Soul" footage. They are mistaken. While this James Brown performance is amazing, Stax Live in Norway (or something like that) blows it out the water.

I hate myself.

@3: When Living Colour opened for the Rolling Stones around 1990 the Stones sucked ass in comparison. Their default mode is sucking ass.

Wow, this has been the best video so far (CAN IT BE TOPPED?!). Sorry Fnarf, as much as I love the go-betweens, this one is much better.

@4 is correct in terms of @3. Also, J-Lo was a great dancer for the Fox show with the Wayan brothers.

Indeed, that performance by JB & the Flames was spectacular and is from the T. A. M. I. (Teen Aged Music International) Show, 1964. It is an incredible R & R document. Word was that Jagger & the Stones were so intimidated by JB that they were reluctant to follow him. The Stones were the headliners. A highly recommended DVD.

@3, is that the show with Sam and Dave filmed from about three inches away that they featured in that Stax documentary? Christ almighty that smokes. It melts the camera lens.

I can't find that, but I found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_juH0AHv…

Fucking hell. Steve Cropper and Al Jackson, Jr. When I said yesterday that Lindy Morrison was my favorite white drummer, I was implying Al Jackson, Jr.

James Brown's performance is a classic but as a counterpoint to his manic energy, here's a wonderful subdued performance of one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

I'll bet the Beck rally fails to hit 6 digits.

And won't hit 3 digits worth of black people.

@13 Six digits? I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't do five digits.

I'm pretty sure that Sam and Dave performance is from the Stax Norway Tour.

Try a little Tenderness by Otis Redding smokes:

You can find the whole thing on YouTube. The ones I was looking at were broken into 6 parts in arbitrary places. Here's part one (you can find the rest from this page):

@16, those are great, but the Sam and Dave clip from the documentary "Respect Yourself: The Stax Story" is unbelievable -- they're performing on what looks like a three-foot-square stage, with barely enough room for the camera, the crowd pressing in, the room about 120 degrees, grainy black-and-white, and they are just bashing the shit out of it.

This isn't as good as that, but it's pretty freaky at the end, and they're wearing those incredible orange suits: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6YJRy-KG…

I've always been partial to the Bizzarro Superman world version of James Brown:

Who may not win 'best live performance' but does win best 'giant white pompadour' of all time.
Now I guess we can stop talking about this.
