This Is What I Think About at 1:30 in the Morning

Posted by on Tue, Aug 24, 2010 at 1:34 AM

Am I the only person who finds it strange that Taco Bell has started serving individual-sized bags of Doritos as a "side dish"? I know Taco Bell is hardly the peak of culinary perfection, but bags of Doritos? Cause frying up some corn tortilla strips is just too much effort FOR A PLACE THAT'S SUPPOSED TO MAKE FOOD? They're one step away from handing over a Mexican Style Hot Pocket, and pointing you to a microwave.

I thought about that EXACT same thing when I saw the $2 meal deals, but then, I was more cool with how you're basically getting the Doritos for free. Considering that the main item and the drink themselves would be $2 on their own if bought separately. They'd have higher food cost making fresh tortilla strips or chips in house...

I agree. But they lost me when they discontinued their crispy mexi-nuggets.

I think it's funny that you associate food with Taco Bell.

Well, adding Doritos is better than doing this.

No, you're not the only person that thinks it's weird and wrong. I saw a big sign in the window as I made my usual midnight Saturday run and I thought it was a mistake at first. I assume the restaurant chain is getting them free in exchange for the fantastic advertising space in their windows.

Why would you even eat at taco bell in the first place?

Taco Bell at 1:30 am? I thought you were no drinky/smokey

I would think that for a minute and then I would realize that it's the result of a partnership or a promotion, not trying to make the kitchen efficient.

Hasn't Subway been doing this for years?

Don't go to Taco Bell. If Taco Time is closed, go hungry.

Has anyone noticed that Taco Bell is getting away from the "fourthmeal" thing in their ads? I think they might have realized how obnoxiously gluttonous that was.

Actually, yes, that comment is pretty much spot on for a place like Taco Bell.

Taco Time sucks. Wrap Time more like.

I too greatly miss the mex-nuggets.

(And no, TT's mexi fries are not an exact substitute.)

Taco Bell's purpose is not to make food. It exists to make you thirsty by cramming you full of salt and fat so that you'll buy soda, their highest profit margin item by far, and to convince customers that 32 ounces of soda is a normal portion by making it a "deal" compared to the smaller sizes. They used to be owned by Pepsico, which also owns Doritos. Surprised they didn't do this years ago.

Pepsi owns Frito-Lay and Taco Bell. Taco Bell has been using Frito-Lay corn chips for their nachos for a good 20 years or more.

@ 19, no, Pepsi spun them off (their fast food companies, that is; not sure about Frito-Lay). They're now part of a corporation called "YUM." Or is that their ticker symbol? I forget, but Taco Bell is not part of PepsiCo anymore.

I laughed my ass off when the Taco Bell in my neighborhood, which was on a prominent, high-traffic corner, and had that rarest of rare amenities, a parking lot, went out of business due to lack of interest.

It might have had something to do with the large number of actual Mexican restaurants on the surrounding streets, or possibly just a death spiral of bad management, unfresh food, and a cheerless establishment driving itself out of business.

I laughed again when the new business that took over the property completely razed the building and built a new one.

Honestly, I personally cringe at what fried-in-house Taco Bell tortillas would taste like, and whether I could ever get the grease off of everything.

Starting with the assumption that you want to eat there, I can't see Doritos as a particularly bad idea.

I was under the impression that no cooking was done at any Taco Bell-- the food they "make" is just assembled on-site from pre-cooked, warmed up products.

Do Taco Bells still have fryer's up there? No one in California has ever heard of a Mexi-nugget, and I thought they'd got rid of'em there to.

I think #25 is right. Besides some heaters, it's just an assembly line.
