Dan's right.

Actions speak louder than words.

Good for these folks, for standing up (sitting down) and demanding their natural, lawful, civil rights.

Good thing those cops had those face shields.

What were they arrested for? What was the charge?

I don't know... I'm not really sure what this accomplishes.

I supported Gavin Newsom's issuing of marriage licenses to same sex couples in disobedience of the law, but this is interfering with other people's ability to exercise the very right they are trying to secure. "If I can't have it nobody can." It seems petty--or at least, that's how it will come across to people who don't already support same sex marriage rights, and those are the people who need convincing.

If they really want to make a positive difference in people's opinions, they should go to Imperial County and sit on the steps of their marriage license offices (without blocking access). Or better yet, convince same sex couples in Imperial County to join them. Yes, I suppose it could be dangerous, but it was also dangerous for Rosa Parks to take a seat on that bus.

@5: Obstruction of justice, failure to disperse, refusal to obey, disruption of the peace... come on, does it matter?

@6: The linked article clearly stated "Access wasn't blocked, and at least three straight couples entered the offices to get married during the protest."

And if it was... well, a two-hour delay in getting married pales next to not being allowed to marry at all.

Does my heart good to see some civil action! At last! I mean, after all, being denied one's civil rights isn't reason enough for fucking outrage? Best wishes to those brave enough to make a stand and here's hoping they can afford top notch legal help - including expunging any arrest records. That, these days, can be a reoccurring issue where travel is concerned.

See, I thought the blocking-the-streets-of-Vegas thing was misguided and kind of lame, but this is great. It puts the focus and the disruption in a place that makes sense. Good for them!

I tried pulling that stunt once, about two years back (a healthy dose of Thoreau had put me in the mood for some civil disobedience). Then the court clerk reminded me that marriage equality had been the law in Massachusetts for five years. I felt quite foolish about the whole thing.

I've often thought you and Terry should be in jail looking out all sad eyed and bare bottomed.

@12 some of us live in states that don't have full legal gay marriage, sadly.

I'm also not too impressed with the physical condition of that deputy squad. If a slap fight broke out (an image that makes me giggle just a little bit), I think I'd have to put my money on the lesbians over all others.

@ 14 - Oh, in all seriousness, I'm genuinely impressed with these people. Sit-ins are a time-honored form of civil disobedience, and a powerfully symbolic one as well. Thing is, given current trends, I think this is an issue that's going to be resolved in the courts, not in the legislature.
