What Is Pleasing About this Moment in Time?

Posted by on Tue, Aug 17, 2010 at 9:30 AM

I do not know what it is about this image that makes it break from the continuum of ordinary time.

Is it the folds on her skirt? And what exactly does a fold do to the eye? It announces that "the inside is nothing more than a fold of the outside." Maybe this was the eternity that Benjamin saw in the fold a dress. But here it is the eternity of the folds and the field.

Personally I think it's the composition that's pleasing, but you should ask Jen.

The punctum here is indeed the skirt. We are accustomed to seeing urban landscapes peopled by tourists (with cameras, walking shoes, looking up). Here the rural landscape wears an urban tourist. She is not IN this field; the field is wearing her, just like she wears the skirt.

My post has found all its value in your marvelous sentence: "Here the rural landscape wears an urban tourist."

I thought it was an Andrew Wyeth painting when I first glanced at it.

I'd give my opinion, but I wouldn't want to break the string of pretentiousness that seems to be forming here.

It's not pretentious to notice and be curious about things. Observation isn't pretentious.

I think it's her necklace, as well as the skirt.

@5: You're just saying that because of Christina's World.

Seriously, stop trying to read meaning into cute girls in short skirts. You like what you like, Mudede, and in this case, it's ok if A is A.

@10 that pretty much sums up my reaction, too. the one common element to a charles "why do i love this photo so much?" post is an attractive woman.

Yeah, but it also has an Andrew Wyeth feel to it. Or maybe I just want it to; Andrew Wyeth is my favorite painter.

Charles isn't always about the pretty girl (http://www.thestranger.com/slog/archives…).

Sometimes it really is about the picture. And how it's read.
