STITA Out of the Airport, Yellow Cab In

Posted by on Fri, Aug 6, 2010 at 3:48 PM

Scott Gutierrez has the story:

On Thursday, the state Supreme Court decided not to hear a final appeal by STITA taxi owners, who sued the Port of Seattle to maintain their contract as the exclusive cab service at the airport. In addition to rejecting the appeal, the justices lifted a court order barring the Port of Seattle from signing a new contract with Yellow Cab.

It looks like the change over—from a clean fleet of STITA cabs to the (ahem) Yellow Cab fleet—will happen in November. There's one lawsuit still pending, but I'm not clear if that has any bearing.

Wow, that's a couple of hundred hybrid and natural-gas fueled vehicles out of commission.

@1 That don't have to drive empty as much back to the airport now, so this is equal parts good and shit. I'm conflicted on this as a fan of Yellow Cab for in-city use. I wonder if STITA will be able to survive since they're not licensed for in-Seattle pickups, right?

I'm waiting until Steven Fry runs a taxi service to the airport.

I called for a STITA cab to pick me up (arranged it days ahead of time) and when the driver arrived he asked me how to get to the airport. True, irritating, story. Perhaps one of the judges has had a similar experience.

Why can't the county just pass a law forcing the Port to allow all licensed King County taxis to pick up passengers at the airport?

It only makes sense that a cab should carry people both to and from the airport, otherwise it makes wasteful, empty return trips. If we want cabs to use natural gas we can encourage that through licensing and taxation.

Awesome. I'll really care a lot about this when I use the light rail.
