Visual Art The Art Has Landed

An intervention.

The official opening of MadArt in Cal Anderson Park isn't until August 12, but Jason Puccinelli's rocket has already crashed into the lawn, Alex Hayden's finely crafted and painted skate ramp (at least it looks like a skate ramp) already bears the skids of wear, and the wood skeleton of Casey Curran's disc sculpture is so beautiful that it would be a shame to hide it under a finish surface of any kind—but in case he does, get out there soon while you can still see the bones.

The artists—those three plus Justin Lytle, Amy Johnson, and Stephen Rock, whose works I couldn't find on my trek this morning—are out in the park working all week, using the park as their studios. Talk to them, ask them what they're doing, ask them why they're doing it, bring them a lemonade (or a hot chocolate, for the love of god).

The art will be up through September 12.

The "love" sign and the red construction wall aren't part of Alex Hayden's sculpture, but they sure add to the scene.

You start thinking everything's a potential sculpture.

Casey welcomed me to sit on the surface of his unfinished sculpture while he was still cutting drilling and adding more life into this circular tilting land on land. It's a great spot to rest the weary, get lost in the clouds, and people watch the people watching you. I'm looking forward to visiting it again when the surface is covered with grass. It shall be my favorite sitting spot at the park for the summer.

This is very Burning Man. Only a few weeks left before the gigantic art show in the desert.

That rocket-ship one reminds me of what happened to one of my rockets when the chute didn't deploy properly. The fucker was totaled when it hit the ground, though.

I walked past a dead rat in the park on my walk to work this morning. It was on the trail between the skate-ramp-bench-thing and the crash-landed rocket ship. It had its face and stomach eaten out, but the rest of it was still in tact, fuzzy little head and body, feet frozen in the position of clawing at the sky, long ratty tail. It looked like a sculpture.
