Today in Bad Tattoos: Patriotic Illiteracy Edition

Posted by on Fri, Jul 23, 2010 at 4:21 PM

Slog Tipper Lara alerted me to a "patriotic" tattoo. Here's a bit of it:

You can see the whole thing here. So many questions: It's ironic, right? Why would you get an ironic tattoo? Does the person who got this tattoo really read books? Is the person who got this tattoo gay? Why? Why, dear God, why?

Having a tattoo won't make you gay.

Just as not having one won't either.

Altho I'd be highly suspicious of anyone with an HIV Pos tattoo.

Maybe it's airbrushed, rather than a real tattoo? I bet a tattoo artist could tell just from the photo. The reds and yellows on real tattoos usually aren't quite that vibrant. My vote is for "airbrushed on before attending an anti-conservative something demonstration"...

If it was real, you could make the tattoo-ee's head explody by asking them a couple questions:
1. Is 'Murrica a Christian nation, founded on Christian principles?

2. Being a Christian therefore involves reading the Bible, right?

3. So does reading the Bible make a person a faggot?

Please, someone find the fucktard with that tattoo, and ask him (or her) those questions.

it's hyperbolic ....

believing in the literal word of the bible, does not not always mean they actually read it.

well duh ... yes I do know that the people that read the most in this nation ... read the bible.

Then again ... does trolling around online incessantly count for something? Perhaps not.

The tattoo is just venting facetious anger about people discarding "knowledge" for hard line Christian morals.

I can't believe Dr. Awesome I have to defend a tattoo ... it was never meant to be "logical" political cartoons rarely are ... they are just exposing hypocrisy, the opposite of logic.

That said, political cartoons get dated, tattoos more or less last a lifetime ... wtf was that guy thinking?

That tattoo reminds me of the time I went poking around on MySpace to see what an ex-boyfriend was up to. Found his wife's page. Under "Favorite Books" she wrote "Yeah, right". As in yeah, right, reading is for nerds. Yeah. I gave myself a pass to feel smugly superior for at least a day after that.

this is a real tattoo...and it's hilarious...except for the "faggot" part, that could have been done without...

Um, Tri-State? You're talking about nuance. The 'Fuck Yeah, 'Murrica!' crowd doesn't really get nuance. Nor irony. But you just go on, trying to defend that tattoo. We'll just sit here and watch, it should be entertaining.

I'm going to choose to believe those books are the Torah, the Bible and the Koran.

Well, if NOT reeding (sic) the bible was good enough for the faithful during the Dark Ages, then not reeding it today should be good enough for them as well.

And really, when you've got a priest at the front of the church telling you what's in it already, reeding it is sort of redundant anyway, right?

Dr. Awesome ... I'm defending the concept not the tattoo ..

In three years it will be as relevant and confusing as "o-grab-me"

it's merely another case of a person thinking they're more clever than they are.

unfortunately, as with most "ironic" tattoos, the idea is the funny part. actually getting the tattoo ruins it...now you're a dude who got a silly tattoo, which almost completely negates your credibility.

"he'll do anything for a laugh" is kind of a bummer.

This is a 4chan meme. So there's an explanation for it, but it just makes it more terrible.
