Madame K's in Ballard Will Close in October

Posted by on Wed, Jul 21, 2010 at 9:12 AM

People of Seattle: You only have three months to get your orgasms before they're gone for good. Madame K's, the brothel-themed pizzeria on Ballard Ave, will close its doors on October 28th. And they're taking their famous Orgasm dessert (a lump of rich chocolate chip cookie dough, baked to gooey perfection in a small skillet and then heaped with vanilla ice cream the second it comes out of the oven) with them.

Sigh.

Says their press release:

Madame K’s owner Kirsten Burt opened the doors more than a decade ago, and has since become renowned for great pizza, the whimsical theme, playful energy and of course the famous Orgasm. They joined a very small handful of restaurants in Ballard at the time, and have seen an explosion of food and entertainment choices in the neighborhood since, going from just dozens to more than 100. Still, Madame K’s has remained a Ballard institution, with its brothel-themed space steeped in Ballard history and delicious pizzas, pastas, salads and sangria satisfying thousands of customers over the years.

The Madame’s loyal staff- many of whom have worked at the restaurant for more than 5 years- will be on hand to pour toasts to their favorite regulars and new customers alike as they close the doors this Fall. “Our lease is up again, and it finally feels like its time for Madame K’s to make its grand finale,” says Burt. “We’ve had an ongoing turbulent relationship with our landlord- but a magical 12 years in Ballard- and we are sad but satisfied that this is the right time.”

This isn't the first time the restaurant has threatened to close. Last year, rumors swirled that the space had a month left. But, sadly, this time the closure is for good.

Before they shut the doors, they're giving their customers a chance to WIN FREE PIZZA! Back to you, press release:

The Madame has set up a yahoo account for everyone to share their own special memories. Send memories to: madamekmemories@yahoo.com. One winner will be chosen each week from July 15-October 15 to win a free pizza for sending in their special memory. The memory will also be posted at Madame K’s each week. Be sure to include your name, email and phone (to be entered into contest). Only first names will appear in the restaurant display.

There is a "sister" restaurant in Carnation- The Lazy K. I know it's a drive for Ballard folks, but we "country" folk make the trek across the lake too-

That's too bad, but their quality was slipping years ago, when my wife and I were still in Seattle. First, their two best waitresses left (who alone were worth the trip, and they never found anyone who could match their garrulous, fun-loving personalities), and later, their kitchen staff seemed to have gotten sloppy. Their delicious mac and cheese was so friggin greasy sometimes. I think the last time we went was sometime in 2004, before our first daughter was born.

Maybe they turned it around, but if they're closing, then maybe not.

whoo-wee! I'm surprised they stayed as long as they did. The landlord and his family own a ton of property on Ballard Ave and they are ... an interesting group to say the least. The Stranger could find a great story to do on this fam, I'm tellin ya! Happy Trails wacky Madame K and all you hotties that work there!

At least they've toned down the bashing of their neighborhood and patrons a bit this time. Their last threat to close read like a giant F.U. to their customers. A lot of locals stopped going after that last rant.

so who is this landlord? IS this same jerk that closed Epilogue Books --and hasn't been able to rent that space since! and the Chai tea house?

Hasn't the Broadway Grill been doing this for, like, a decade? (If they removed it from the menu since the last time I was there, I'll be sad.)

I think it's on the menu at chain restaurant Chili's, too.
