Pop Quiz: What Exactly Are You Looking At Here?

Answer is after the jump.

It's a still from an MRI Scan of an orange, from Inside Insides, along with lots of other neat MRI Scan gifs of fruits and vegetables (the broccoli and artichoke are my favorites). (Via the always-charming Bookshelves of Doom.)

I was going to say grapefruit. What were you thinking?

Having recently viewed one of these of my shoulder, I guessed right. Except it's not a "still", is it?

Very neat. I wonder though, with the enormous expense of MRI scans, who is spending the cash on scanning fruits and vegetables?

Damn, I got it right first time.

By the way, I think it has a mild lesion and the first sign of Alzheimers, or perhaps the beginning stages of Pick's Disease.

Probably a test run for kids is my guess - easy to run one through between patients during Science Day.

I thought it was an MRI of a breast.

Having said that, and to combine two Slog topics in one, the animation now reminds me of the "talking anus" in Pink Flamingos.

In this case, wouldn't it have been cheaper just to operate?

Most of the money you pay for an MRI scan just goes to cover the enormous "mortgage" on the costly MRI hardware. The actual cost of performing the scan is only a small part of the total expense.

I called it as an MRI of an orange before the jump.

And after the jump, wherein it was revealed that someone has managed to take LOTS of MRIs of fruit and vegetables... I couldn't help but think of the hospitals who raise money to get an extra MRI machine, and of the patients with potential brain/cranial diseases who can't afford an MRI to diagnose them because their insurance doesn't think it's necessary (or only covers 50%).

This is Glenn Beck's America -- where sick people can't get MRIs, but food can.
