Big Mario's Is Open

Posted by on Thu, Jul 15, 2010 at 2:05 PM

Finally, a pizza joint is open in Pike/Pine with a window to feed the drunks outside, a full bar for the drunks inside, hours till 4:00 a.m. on Thursday through Saturday, and the dimensions of a rail car. Behold, diners and lushes, Big Mario's:

Cienna got two slices—one with pesto and another with sausage—and she says, "Whomoofuthrullygooh." I see Manhattans and heartburn in my future.

In other news, Bar Ferdinand has opened and Bethany wants you to know that they have wine and booze but no food yet.

But does it taste like real NYC pie?

Sweet. I love hearing about new late-night food options.

I've been disappointed with Hot Mama's lately. Look forward to checking this place out.

Pizza does not look good on such a toasty day and sushi (like all the new ones opening) sounds pretty gross, too.

With weather like this, it's fresh, cold smoothies and coctails.

Better. The people aren't rude when you're trying to give them money and the pizza isn't cold and/or slimy as Hot Mama's can be. So it's far, far better.

@3 hopefully it's nothing like Hot Mama's as there is nothing remarkable about Hot Mama's. That's the most overrated hipster crap on the hill.

You know @8, not EVERYTHING that sucks, sucks because of some quasi-association with hipsters. Sometimes it just, you know, sucks because it sucks.

The slices I just got were not very warm but they do taste way better than Hot Mama's.

I don't pretend to know what NY pizza is like, but this was great regardless--the crusts were crisp, the potato/pesto pizza blew me away, and the sausage on my other slice was superb. Oh and, AND! a dog inside ate my napkin afterward. That's service.

@9 you are 100% correct. I stand corrected and that thin, limp, oily pizza is mediocre on it's own merits.

Fnarf 13
@12: thin, limp, oily? That IS authentic NYC pizza, then.

All I want to know is, do they make a decent white pie? I haven't had decent white pizza since I left Ann Arbor.

@17: Chicago-style pizza is a casserole with a crust. Not really the same thing.

The link to Big Mario's Stranger restaurant listings page says its co-owned by the Caffe Vita conglomerate. Don't they already own Via Tribunali?

There's nothing unique or special about all the random pizza joints in NYC other than the undeserved praise that people heap upon them.

Looks like NYC pizza = TERRIBLE.

NYC has easily the worst pizza, bagels, burritos in the world.

It's because 99% of the pizza/bagel/burrito places are FUCKING TERRIBLE JOKES, its like there is some guy selling terrible restaurants out the back of a van.

AND LIKE IN ALL FUCKING CITIES, there are a few truly delicious and amazing pizza/bagel/burrito places, but none that you should make the area known for it.

Kinda like Seattle and coffee.

Best pizza in the world right here. Compared to it, New York Pizza is like cardboard covered with melted red crayons.

I didn't know people actually liked Hot Mama's. I always assumed people stopped in out of desperation, since they've always been in a prime spot, desperation-wise.

@20: But do we know that the Stranger's listing is correct? And if so, isn't it strange that they're diluting their Neopolitan pizza brand with a one-off late-night grease-pizza joint?
