The 1970s Were Strange

Posted by on Tue, Jul 13, 2010 at 3:29 PM

Case in point: This television commercial for Peter Pan peanut butter, featuring a tweaked-out costume fetishist accosting children by barging through their kitchen window. Warning: It may make you crave peanut butter, and a shower.

Thanks, WOW Report!

Actually, I don't want to know how Peter Pan makes his peanut butter.

What a brand killer.

Ah, Laugh-In's Alan Sues, one of the four teevee gays the 70s allowed.

Given his (presumed) current age, it's a fairly reasonable guess that this guy's fetish has its origins in this 38-year-old advert.

Ugh. Peter Pan, Skippy, et al. They taste like cardboard, powdered sugar, and lard puréed in a Cuisinart. Get some peanuts-only peanut butter. Yeah, you have to stir it for a few minutes, ONCE, to mix the oil back in. It'll do your flabby arms some good. Put the mixed PB in the fridge after opening; no more separation. Microwave for 15 seconds with the lid off to make soft enough to spread without tearing the bread up.

I don't even have to look at it to see that it's Alan Sues, the go-to guy for gay in the 70s when Paul Lynde was busy. He's like a funnier Will Ferrell.

I don't know, I didn't think the '70s were strange at all. I kinda miss them sometimes, actually.

@4 Maranatha's peanut butter seems to stay nice and soft, even in the fridge. I pour the whole thing into a mixing bowl, whisk it, then put it back in the jar (once), less sloshing...

mmm, vegan porn...

Vegan porn would be better if the actors ever took off their sandals.

As I recall, we were all thinking about a certain young actress who had acted in that role before, when the ad came out.

@8 - um, not if they don't trim em.

Look close, I think the mom here played one of the 3 dates in "Harold And Maude" a year earlier.

The thing I loved about the 70's is that we didn't take ourselves so seriously. Parents were more relaxed, work was more relaxed, there wasn't all this crap about being rich (because hardly anyone was - even "rich" people back then weren't like "rich" people today) and there was almost no entertainment reporting, hence hardly any celebrities - or, at the very least, much more interesting celebrities.

Look at the family in this commercial. The mother is an adult who's not even trying to look eighteen (and has good taste in cookware - check out her Catherine Holm mixing bowl), and the kids aren't smartasses. If they were to make this commercial today, it would be for an alarm company, and "Peter Pan" would be a pedophile who is tasered to death by the police.

@8 You know, Gus, I just Googled "vegan porn," and not only did I find the "vegporn" site ("titillating tofu eaters!" header), but I just saw WAY too many chicks with pierced nipples stirring skillets of quinoa and lentils. Thank you, sweetie, thank very much. What is it you say? "You're getting such a frowning..."

Bwahaha, Canuck dear! Of course the "frowning" line was a straight lift from Grandpa Simpson, and gawd knows where those writers mighta stolen it...

They got a GROWN MAN to play the part of Peter Pan.

What was the whole point of Neverland (as written by Barrie) anyway?

@6 and @13:
I have nothing but fond memories of 70's. My sister and I had free reign over the back seat of our station wagon (no seat belts or car seats). We could peddle around with our friends in the neighborhood without a bike helmet or mom arranging a "play date".

Things were definitely simpler then, which is kind of ironic given all the new modern "conveniences" we now enjoy.

@2: Those four were Alan Sues, Paul Lynde, Charles Nelson Reilly, and ... Liberace?

@13:

Yeah, that was the early 70s...but underneath all the peace and quiet, Mom was a seething "bed burner" who wanted to break free and go into graphic design.

Supreme Ruler dear, the last word I would use to describe the 70's was "peace.". The second-to-last word would be "quiet".

Armistead Maupin gave a great defense of the 1970s in one of his later books (Michael to Brian? or his nephew? can't remember).

I don't think it covered the Peter Pan commercials, though.
