'Soccer Fans Shun Hookers for Art's Sake'

They didn't want sex, they wanted culture: One of the weirder stories to come out of the World Cup.

See, not everyone is like the President of South Africa ...

If I had travelled all the way to South Africa, it would be to see the culture and cultural exhibits, not for something that exists everywhere.

Hmm... I wonder. If this were American football, and not global football, would the result have been the same?

could the well-known sky-high rates of HIV infection in S. Africa have anything to do with reluctance to patronize it's sex workers? one can only wonder...

Well, that certainly sounds scientific.

If I ever make it to South Africa I won't be visiting the museums or the brothels. I'll be looking for music.

There were some comments in the articles thread that may have explained this quite well. 1st, there is the high cost involved of getting to the event, and I assume that the tickets weren't cheap either. So that, plus the high HIV rate, would explain the drop...for street prostitutes, anyway.
Another comment listed some clubs and bars where one could go and "walk out with some leg for free". OK, so the wealthy people who traveled to this event did their research and figured out where to go to hook up with some international strange in a manner that is far more satisfying and acceptable than dialing up some high end agency and having a bird come over for an hour or 2.
What would have made this article complete would have been a comparison to the sex trade in other nations that have hosted the cup. Wasn't it Germany who hosted the last time, and aren't brothels legal there? How did they do.
Finally, who's to say that people who travel the workd to events like this don't visit the museums and other cultural attractions AND hire a woman for an hour or the night?

And we don't believe you can get rid of AIDS with a cold shower.

@6 of course not, that requires sex with a virgin, which is why 2/5ths of all women in South Africa report their first sexual act was being raped.

@6, that was the last president, not the current one. The current one is rational on the subject of AIDS. He's got a hell of a hole to dig out of, though.

It's articles like this that make me lose faith in humanity.

Since the numbers of sex workers they were anticipating was bullshit pulled out of thin air, I'm not surprised that it didn't end up being some sort of international hooker convention.
