Women Without Men: Seattle Premiere

Posted by on Thu, Jul 8, 2010 at 9:10 AM

This is Zarin.

womenwithoutmen_email.gif

She is an anorexic prostitute in Iran, until she hallucinates that the face of one of her johns has closed over except his eyes, at which point she has to get out.

She's one of the four Women Without Men in Shirin Neshat's new movie based on the novel of the same name. Neshat is one of the more amazing artists in the world, and typically she makes video installations and photographs, but this is her first feature film. Do see it: Zarin, among other moments in the film, is unforgettable. Its Seattle premiere is at Northwest Film Forum starting Friday, and my interview with her from her home in New York, done Tuesday afternoon, is here.

I saw this last week in my town, thought it was ok, but nothing super special.

I wish they would've gone farther with the bizarre visual symbolism.
