Uruguay vs. Ghana

Posted by on Fri, Jul 2, 2010 at 11:14 AM

FINAL SCORE: Uruguay wins, 1 (4) - (2) 1. (Went into over time, crazy handball at the last minute, then went into penalty kicks. And now all the Uruguay players in baby blue are dancing, dancing, dancing...)

Now that I look at it, I think (4) 1 - 1 (2) would be better.

Was that handball a brilliant strategic sacrifice or a vile game stealing error? I lean toward the former.

@6, the former. He had no choice; it was a goal otherwise, on the final ball of the game. There's not a player in the game who would have done differently. He HAD to; and it took Uruguay from a 0% chance of winning to 50%.

who cares if he "had" to. what it means is that futbol has a glaring, disgusting, dirty, dishonest flaw in it if it pays to cheat like that. especially if people accept it as ok.

@ 11, That's not "cheating" - cheating is when you try to get away with something.

He blocked the pass with a handball, he took a red card and was immediately kicked out of the game and suspended for the next round, which means Uruguay will be without a key player in the semi-final. If you know anything about team sports, you know that this means a) it was far from routine and b) it handicaps the team in a vital match.

Read up on Ghana's players' reactions. None of them are saying he cheated; they're saying "that's football." They understand. You need to understand, too.

Hey, Onion, now this morning's news includes a report that Suarez may be kicked out of the World Cup altogether. FIFA is looking into it. So, what do you think of that?

I watched until min 95 until I had to leave for a hiking trip. I caught a reply of the ending in Leavenworth. My entire time in the cascades was marred by the end of this game, obsessing the entire time pondering the repercussions, consequences, meanings, etc etc. I always disliked Uruguay, but now I loathe them more than anything.
