Can You Name That "Music Festival" Yesterday?

Posted by on Mon, Jun 28, 2010 at 2:20 PM

Slog tipper Sue called to say that she likes baseball and was reading the Seattle Times this morning when she came along a curious passage in the sports section. Reporter Geoff Baker explains that Mariner Russell Branyan was late to a game "because a music festival in this city caused numerous flights to be sold out."

Having checked listings around town for the weekend, Sue concludes that the "music festival" Baker was referring to—the only event big enough to fill flights into town—is commonly referred as a gay-pride parade. Maybe the style guide doesn't allow the words "gay pride" in the sports section? Baker has not returned a call seeking comment on his choice of words.

UPDATE: Okay, I'm silly for not checking the article that Sue sent more thoroughly. The game was in Milwaukee, it looks like. Like Sue, I assumed the Seattle Times writer was in Seattle when he said "in this city." And I'm an idiot, thank you very much.

Waitaminute, here: people flying to Seattle for Pride, okay. Friday night, sure. Saturday, okay. But out-of-towners waiting until Sunday morning to fly in, in numbers large enough to sell out planes? Er..

Oh, wait, was I supposed to read the post before commenting? Fuck me, I've become Will in Seattle. With less of a gag reflex.

Um, I believe the "here" in the article, as indicated by the byline, is MILWAUKEE. Not Seattle. Duh.

(Also, the Mariners were playing in Milwaukee this weekend, where Branyan joined them. Which some rudimentary research would have determined.)

Summerfest. http://www.summerfest.com/flash/#

Come on, Sue, I know the M's are bad, but you can still tell when they're in town. And Holden? There's a byline in your hyperlink. Kind of a clue.

I guess this is why the Stranger truly is "Seattle's Only
Newspaper."

LOLZ

Nice reporting Dom!

Okay, my bad for not checking the article that our Slog tipper sent more thoroughly. The game was in Milwaukee so the event wasn't pride, obviously. I hastily assumed the Seattle Times writer was in Seattle when he said "in this city." My bad. I'm an idjit.

Jeff @7 for the win. It's a point I've been making 'round here for years.

"Seattle's Only Newspaper" indeed.

If only The Stranger would occasionally show some humility in reaction to things like this. But that would be hard. What's easy is just to continue to hammer every other publication in town at every opportunity, no matter how big or small their transgression may be.

I look forward to the next Stupid Whatever Whatever Hack blah blah...

For the record, I posted my comment before Dom's @8 showed up.

But ... the bigger point still stands.

I can't wait to hear Geoff Baker's explanation for his 'choice of words.'

Don't you know that The Stranger relies on someone who lives in Chicago to report on Seattle sports news? Save the baseball reporting for a Midwesterner.

@8: "I hastily assumed the Seattle Times writer was in Seattle when he said 'in this city.'"

That's why real newspapers have these things called "datelines". So you can tell where the writer was when he said something.

(They also, still, sometimes, have enough money to actually send their writers where the news is. Maybe you're just not used to that....)

I actually really enjoy reading Baker's Mariners blog. He seems to do a pretty good job in general, and I even sort of get the impression he probably sits pretty left of center politically (not that he ever really discusses such matters, which is obviously the last thing you want from a sports blogger.)

The event in question is probably Summerfest. It's not really my thing either, but it's one of the biggest music festivals in the country.

Thanks Dominic. Is there something special that you're taking or doing that allows you to be a humble journalist and admit your mistakes? You seem to be doing something that 98% of other journalists in America aren't doing.

Of course, I could be mistaken in assuming you're a journalist. ;-p

Without googling it, I'm guessing it must have been Summerfest. I had a friend who went to medical school in Milwaukee and he used to talk about it.

Summerfest. It's Milwaukee's Bumbershoot more or less.

Dominic deserves a "Stupid Fucking Credulous Hack of the Day" award for this.

"Maybe the style guide doesn't allow the words "gay pride" in the sports section?"

One must ask then, does the Stranger's Style guide allow for a follow up apology to Geoff Baker?

I mean, you basically accused him of being homophobic, but instead tripped all over your lack of facts, logic or reason.

So reactionary. It makes you look a little silly, really.
