You would rather be sweltering with the rest of the country? Shoulda gone to the Solstice parade. Lots of fun, and a swell performance by the Rainbow City Band. Would have been miserable in hot weather, crammed armpit to asshole with all those spectators.
And next weekend, the Rainbow City Band will be playng and marching in the Pride Parade. They are fabulous!

Remember the "Modern Family" where they all flew to Hawaii on Continental and stayed at the prominently featured Four Seasons, so the producers didn't have to pay a dime for the costs of the show?

Well, isn't there a "GLBTQ blogger parents of tweens" family convention in Maui right about now? And if not, couldn't you get one going right quick, sponsored by advertisers x, y and z? Since you'll write about going to it, it's all tax-deductible, no? Pays for itself?

Just an idea.

If Seattle weather was a woman it'd be the kind that's amazing in bed, but threatens to kill herself (and your dog) if you ever leave her. You put up with the crazy because when it's good...it's mindblowingly awesome. And there are JUST enough amazing lays/days to make all the 911 calls worth it.

The only way I get through the spring/early summer is to focus on the good days (last weekend, so pretty) through the weeks of throat-slitting-worthy gray.

But at least I never take nice weather for granted anymore!

(Note: Like Dan, I'm a midwest/Chicago transplant, and therefore legally forbidden from disparaging Seattle weather. I've already told myself to go back to where I came from, just to save you the effort.)

The natives love it though.

Eventually everyone who moved here after 1992 and got snookered by a brief interlude of global warming will either die from diabetes or be lured back south by cheap rent and even cheaper houses in So. Cal.

I mean, check out I-5 at 9pm on a Friday, yesterday.

Fnarf--the giant switch gets flipped a little later up in the Islands: around the 15th. For the newbies: June is sometimes like this up in the left corner of the map. (Strawberry season flatlined in '65, '66). The June of '80 or '81 was a very wet one--rained almost every day. The very leaky Second Stage at 8th and Pike--demolished for the convention center--was a menagerie of assorted pots and pans catching dripping water.
Mr. Savage: this PNW Native would gladly trade you one of those Tom Robbins' greys for an Antebellum Bake-fest. Here in the Deep South this season, we've skipped June and July altogether and have settled on pure August weather. Hellacious. Nothing to do but sip Sweet Tea, while looking like a "soft teacake with frosting from sweating and sweet talcum" by nightfall.

This is certainly the rainiest, coolest, least-sunny spring that I can recall. I remember being at Gasworks Park for the 4th of July in the late 80s and it was very chilly and rainy but I don't remember the entire spring that year being that way.

I'll take weather like this over 90+ weather but I would like to have some warmth and a little sun because, after all, we only have a few months before we plunge back into the near-constant rain and gloom of fall & winter.

@ 10: The natives do not all love it. I hate it. I hate hate hate this state and this awful weather. My family moved here when I was 6 months old, and I've been raised in this horrid, dreary environment. I detest it. I wait all year, counting down the days until bright sunny June. The only thing that makes this state bearable is the summer, and now we're not even getting that?!?

Normally on a day like today, I'd drive to E. Washington or Portland -- there's usually sun somewhere within driving distance. But lately? This crud weather has permeated the entire state (according to weather maps) and oozes into Oregon, Idaho and most of California.

Ugh.

While I prefer sun to gray skies, there's a huge difference between gray skies and rain. Things like the Fremont Fair Solstice parade (or the fair itself) or Bumbershoot are still enjoyable even if there's not a speck of sun in the sky but it's dry. But they just become soggy and sloppy and miserable (for most people) if it's raining. Thanks to Mother Nature for not emptying her bladder on the Solstice parade yesterday.

All the fucking whining from *natives*, no less. Born and raised Washingtonian, and, for all you whiners- sun, heat and CA-like weather is a mere 2 hours east. Yes, EAST, over those mountains, to the warm, sunny side of the state. Was beautiful here all weekend. I've lived on both sides, but when retirement time came, it was the sunshine that won out.
Granted, you've got to put up with the gd rednecks and the politics, but that can easily be ignored by any Seattlite, since the world revolves around Seattle anyway.

I would kill for a cloudy, cool day. The afternoon rainstorms are the only break we get from the 90's in Louisiana from May until October. For the past week, it has been close to 90 at midnight. And the heat is hitting me worse this year than it usually does, at least partially because the air conditioner in my aparment leaks and the manager is dragging her feet on getting it fixed (though at least she said she would, which is more than the other managers I've complained to have done). I'm miserable and cranky and stuck here because I'm also broke.

57/Sheryl: The afternoon rainstorms are the only break we get from the 90's in Louisiana from May until October.

I grew up in a state north of you, which can have very hot and muggy days in the summer. But I never experienced humidity like I did the one time I was in New Orleans, in August (the year Hurricane Andrew passed nearby.) I remember walking out of my hotel and feeling like a hot & wet heavy blanket was immediately thrown over me.

I miss thunderstorms though. It's great to have it pour like hell all at once and then stop. Here in Seattle, we just get rain and rain and more rain for days on end and it really gets depressing.
Posted by Roma on June 20, 2010 at 3:29 PM

@62 - Yeah, I grew up in Pittsburgh, which is surprisingly humid for an essentially midwestern city (guess it's the rivers). But when I moved down here, I learned what heat and humidity really meant. On days when I take my laundry to work with me to go to the laundromat after work, my clothes are soaked by the time I leave work just from sitting in my car all day.

I decided I would leave South Carolina when I was 10 years old because I was just too damn sick of the heat. I love the weather here in Seattle. I don't mind overcast skies, I don't care for sun too much. I absolutely hated driving through Kansas because of that damn glare.

Thing is though, Seattle isn't nearly as rainy as it makes itself out to be. It's actually rather sunny most of the summer, and the rain isn't heavy. Most Seattle denizens don't even know what an honest-to-God downpour is like. It's the kind of rain that hurts when it hits you and takes your breath away.

In August, Chicagoans won't be bragging about their weather, after 150 old farts and 20 infants die of heat stroke.
